SVG improperly cropped

See File:Planned Rhapsody architecture.svg. In Inkscape and Chrome, it displays fine, but on Wikimedia the right and bottom sides are cropped out. How do I fix this? DFlhb (talk) 15:37, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

Many thanks to User:TilmannR; that worked. DFlhb (talk) 18:48, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
You're welcome! For anyone interested in what the problem was: The width and height of the image were given in "pt" units, which apparently don't get converted consistently. TilmannR (talk) 19:30, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

Здравствуйте! Если музыкальный лейбл скинул мне на электронную почту файл с Яндекс Диска с фото одного из музыкантов лейбла и разрешили использовать его для Википедии - могу ли я его загрузить на Викисклад? Hello! If a music label emailed me a file from Yandex Disk with a photo of one of the label's musicians and allowed me to use it for Wikipedia, then can I upload it to Wikimedia Commons? Or does the label have to give permission to use like in the template? — Preceding unsigned comment added by KirillQQ (talk • contribs) 10:24, 1 February 2023 (UTC) KirillQQ (talk) 10:24, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

@KirillQQ: Commons cannot accept content on the basis that it is "allowed for use on Wikipedia". We need it free-licensed.
As for uploading directly to Wikipedia (not involving Commons), each language Wikipedia has its own policy for "fair use". en-wiki generally doesn't allow non-free images of living people, so this presumably could not be used there, either.
If they want this on Commons (and on most Wikipedias) they will need to offer a free license. They could either post it to the web on what is clearly their own site (or a page under their control) with a free license (which must allow derivative works and commercial use) or they could go through the COM:VRT process. - Jmabel ! talk 15:57, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

File deleted from The Commons - No file by this name exists...

I downloaded this photo last year or so to use later in a project. I never used it until now that I decided to check the status online and to my shock, it is no longer available here.

According to The Commons, "No file by this name exists, but you can upload it."

But I still have the picture and all the details surrounding the attributions. Is it ok to use this picture for the intended purpose without anyone chasing me? Is it a common practice for files to appear and disappear from The Commons? What happens if I use it before and after it is no longer on The Commons?

The details I copied from the file at the time are as follow (by the way, I always save image particulars together with the image just in case):

File:Picasso (40119265371).jpg

Thanks HeyChris23 (talk) 11:31, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

@HeyChris23: At File:Picasso (40119265371).jpg you'll find a note that explains why the file was removed, which links to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Picasso (40119265371).jpg, where it's mentioned that Picasso died in 1973, which is less the 70 years ago and so his works are still in copyright in the European Union. I presume this file was a work by Picasso, and so it was never eligible for hosting on Commons. This kind of thing happens fairly frequently: people upload files with incorrect copyright information and eventually someone notices and they get removed. You can see how often in the deletion log. As for what this means for you, it certainly suggests that you shouldn't trust any copyright information that came with the file, and that the true copyright owner might have a claim against you. I'm not your lawyer, but I'd say you should stop using the file in any context where a copyright violation would be a problem. --bjh21 (talk) 12:20, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

Germany Law: Sharing a photo with recognisable faces

I know the law in Germany prohibits sharing photos of people where they are recognisable. But when the people are not on the focus of the photo, can I share such a photo? To be precise, I have taken a photo of interior area of my university and face of some students and some staff are visible in the photos, however they are not necessarily the focus of the photo. Can I publish such photos? LastElement (talk) 01:43, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

I don't know what you mean by "sharing". You can "share" any foto with your family or a close friend. But your question is probably actually about publishing. You can publish fotos of people, if they either allow it ("model release") or it there is a public interest (fotos from public demonstrations or protests) or if they are only "Beiwerk" (de minimis). Beiwerk means, that there is a person (or more persons) on the foto, but the viewer will not recognize them normally because the motif of the foto is something different. A foto of a building can be legal, while a crop of this foto can be illegal, because the people become recognizable. But something else: you say "interiour of an uni". Freedom of panorama does not apply (Coprright!), but the owner of the building can forbid to take fotos or to publish fotos at all or outside social media. C.Suthorn (talk) 10:03, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
Expanding on that in one respect: Freedom of panorama in Germany does not apply indoors. - Jmabel ! talk 16:01, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Uploading mp4 videos

I tried uploading some videos I took during my great grandmother's funeral, but I couldn't; the error message was, "Google does not accept mp4". How do I get around this? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MuaMee (talk • contribs) 07:23, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

You have to transcode the videos to WebM format. you can co that locally or with v2c or with any other tool, that is capable of transcoding mp4 to webm. C.Suthorn (talk) 09:55, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
Unfortunately, Wikimedia Commons does not accept MP4 files. As @C.Suthorn suggested, you'll need to convert your videos to a different file type, such as OGG or WebM, before you can upload them. You can find more information about this process here: Help:Converting_video. Udehb-WMF (talk) 14:06, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
Do not use OGG. And if you do use the .ogv file extension. The only reason for ogg would be, if the file was originally an ogg file. webm is the better encoding. C.Suthorn (talk) 14:39, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Upload of schematic drawings

Hello, for a Wikipedia article about electroreceptors in sharks I made several schematic drawings based on illustrations in books and scientific publications. They are not simply copied, but drawn and labeled by myself. If I upload them to Wikipedia Commons, can I claim that it is my own work and refer to the respective sources in the description of the image? Thanks in advance! Simon Bauerle (talk) 20:41, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

  1. @Simon Bauerle: I assume you mean "Wikimedia Commons" (this site). I'm not aware of a "Wikipedia Commons".
  2. Probably good, as long as all you took from your sources is facts, not how those are represented. You can't copyright a fact, just its expression. - Jmabel ! talk 20:44, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Hypothethical question

If you send the creator of a image a message asking if they have given permission for a picture to by uploaded to Wikimedia under CC-BY-SA license and they say no do you still have to go through the normal deletio request procedure? Trade (talk) 02:42, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @Trade: Probably it would still be better to go through a DR. There might be some cases where this would be a speedy-delete, but I can think of a lot of potential problems with that, especially since I presume you got this information through private correspondence that other editors here can't access. If you have a less hypothetical and more specific scenario, though, my answer might be different. - Jmabel ! talk 03:00, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

Images to accompany an article

I would like to upload three images to accompany the English Wikipedia article "David Funchess" (here). I just wanted to post here to make sure any (or all) of these images would be OK to upload, and if so, which copyright information I should provide for each one.

I'm about 90% sure the first one is OK; it's his mugshot with the Florida Department of Corrections. (I'm not 100% sure how to prove this, but I know the picture was taken in either 1975 or 1976 based on the style/backdrop/posing, so it would qualify for the pre-1978 copyright notice. The earliest article in which I've found the exact same mugshot [but in lower quality] was published in 1979, but I could keep looking to see if I can find an earlier article. I don't think the picture exists online outside of news articles, since the Florida DOC doesn't consistently provide mugshots taken before ~November 1996.) (1982 news article featuring this photo - 1979 article with same photo)

The second one is a picture of him in a U.S. Marines uniform. I'm iffy on that one because I know it was taken in the 1960s and published in at least one newspaper article about him (so it might qualify for the pre-1978 copyright notice), but it's also very clearly a personal photo that was given to a newspaper expressly for use in an article published about him in 1986. (1986 news article featuring this photo)

The third is the iffiest one. It's a picture of him placed amongst a bouquet of flowers at a Vietnam War memorial protesting his execution. The picture is of him in the 1960s, but the photo taken OF the picture was taken between April 20-22, 1986. The photo would be great to include towards the end of the article when discussing the protests, but I don't know what the rights for that one would be. (1986 news article featuring this photo)

Thanks for any help! I hope I can at least use one of these :) Afddiary (talk) 14:38, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

@Afddiary:
  1. I believe the mug shot would be {{PD-FLGov}}.
  2. Marine uniform one seems unlikely. Presumably, that use in a newspaper was the first publication of the image, so it's no more available than any other image published in that newspaper.
  3. The third one seems impossible: clearly still a copyrighted image. - Jmabel ! talk 18:58, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks so much for the help and explanations! Pretty unfortunate that #2 and #3 likely cannot be used, especially because I'd hate for the only picture representing the article to be a mugshot - but I totally understand.
I did want to ask about some more pictures, though, because apparently pictures posted by the Florida Memory Project are in the public domain (according to this picture from the Ted Bundy article - featuring the following by the "Permission" section:
Public domain

This work is from the Florida Memory Project hosted at the State Archive of Florida, and is released to the public domain in the United States under the terms of Section 257.35(6), Florida Statutes.

Note: In accordance with the provisions of Section 257.35(6), Florida Statutes, "Any use or reproduction of material deposited with the Florida Photographic Collection shall be allowed pursuant to the provisions of paragraph (1)(b) and subsection (4), provided that appropriate credit for its use is given."

Florida seal
  1. The Florida Memory Project has multiple photos depicting the memorial to David Funchess. In fact, they're in much higher quality than the similar photos included in the newspaper articles linked above. Would those be OK to include, as long as I use that? A few are linked below; all were taken on April 22, 1986.

Thanks again, so much, for your help! Afddiary (talk) 19:50, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
@Afddiary: They certainly seem to make that claim, but I don't understand how they would have acquired the rights to these photos. You might want to contact them to see if they can clarify that. - Jmabel ! talk 00:34, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Works held by Florida Memory require clear provenance, transfer of copyright and physical ownership to the project. See:
https://www.floridamemory.com/learn/about/guidelines.php
Which states: "Copyright/Custody: Materials chosen for digitization must have a deed of gift or transfer form assigning copyright and ownership to the State Archives of Florida." --dsprc (talk) 00:56, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
  • @Dsprc: Very cool! Then they are fine. - Jmabel ! talk 01:27, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
The exact legal form described is this dead simple two pager:
https://dos.myflorida.com/media/31958/deedofgiftdonatetoarchives.pdf
With the copyright assignment being: "1. The Donor(s) being the sole and absolute owner(s) of the materials described on this form, do hereby give, transfer, and deliver all right, title, and interest in and to these materials, together with all copyright and literary property rights that the Donor(s) hold herein, to the Florida State Archives."
FL Dept. of State also seem to indicate they take care to withhold materials which can not be reproduced here in §7 of this FAQ when "copying is specifically prohibited" as well. --dsprc (talk) 02:29, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

How do I create a new page

I would like to add a new page in honor of a legend, Dr. Vithal C. Prabhu whose life's work was to address the taboo in India related to sex education. He was a great friend and peer to Dr. Mahindra Watsa because of the common interest in educating the masses with accurate sex education information. Dr. Prabhu's audience were mostly in Maharashtra because his first sex education book was written in Marathi, a local language of Maharashtra State in India.

One of his biggest achievements was his Marathi book on Human Sexuality publication in 1982, “Niramay Kaamjeevan” which has marked approximately 40 editions and has been translated in multiple Indian languages, and also referenced for a digital sex education app.

He wrote 17 books on General Health. In addition, he authored over 18 books on Human Sexuality, presented over 50 scientific papers at various National and International Conferences, wrote over 750 articles in newspapers and periodicals, lectured over 800 public and professional speeches, including the first human sexuality talk given on the All India Radio in 1985.

Dr Prabhu was the Founder Member and Chairperson of the Council of Sex Education & Parenthood International (CSEPI). For his distinguished work in Sexology and other health areas, he received multiple awards and recognitions, several are missing in this list: · “Golden Lamp” Award, the highest honor by CSEPI · Lifetime Achievement Award at a National Conference of Sexology · Award at the First Asia Pacific Conference of Sexology · Chainakaar Arvind Raut Award · Shalayushi Medical Journalism Award · P.C.I. Trophy at the General Practitioner Association Conference · Maharashtra State – Best Literature Award, three times recipient · 7th World Congress of Sexology – Award in 1985 · Other

Please guide me on how I may start working on his page that could be very similar to the one created for Dr. Mahider Watsa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahinder_Watsa

Although I don't have all the information, I am hoping to start one and update it as more information gets gathered by his followers, or have them request the owner of copy rights to grant permission to the Majestic Book publishers to release the wealth of information that could share about all his publications.

Looking forward to a response in my email Leena.mehta7@gmail.com that is linked to my Wikipedia account. Thank you. Regards, Leena Mehta Leenudi (talk) 19:33, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

Keep in mind that to write an article in Wikipedia, you will need to find sources independent of the subject. For example, you will want to find things that newspapers, magazines, academic papers, etc. have written about Dr. Prabhu. Similarly, for awards given to him, you need to cite a source like that or from the entity that gave the award, not from the person who claims to have received the award. - Jmabel ! talk 00:41, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

Copyright question

Are we allowed to upload photos like this one if the website says that the artist's artworks are in the public domain as stated here? Just making sure. Wow (talk) 01:31, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

@Wow That piece is likely a derivative work of another – likely non-free – photo featuring Reagan, and thus, unlikely to be allowed.
In the USA, a PD dedication like this is probably OK. Public Domain dedication outside of that is… complicated… depending on where a particular work is created, or (re)used, and some countries do not recognize such dedications at all. Countries such as France, do not allow one to waive their moral rights, for example, and would require something like a CC0 license applied to the original work. I believe Germany may be similar to France, but don't know enough about those legal frameworks or jurisprudence. --dsprc (talk) 03:17, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
If you were to look at the website besides simply the public domain statement, you would find that the photo in question is an American work, and is directly from the art collective's website - thus, they own the photo and have released into the public domain. Verifying this is easy and takes less than a minute if you deign to do so.Jaydenwithay (talk) 03:39, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

- Jmabel ! talk 05:16, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

SVGs dont render properly in their previews. Why?

The title says my question, so I'll say it again.

When looking at this file's History, I found out that the rendering was glitched for some reason on the preview. I remember a even worse glitch happened on the Qing Empire's flag too! Even the Naval Jack of the USA isn't safe!

What in the world is going on here? Why is this happening? Is this being fixed or not?

(I tried to look at it using Firefox. No dice. [i use arch btw] I then used Safari on my iPad. Fail. It's consistent on everything.) Kxeon (talk) 03:52, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

@Kxeon: It's consistent in all browsers, because the previews are just plain old PNGs. The problem is that Wikimedia Commons' SVG renderer, which creates the PNGs, doesn't render elliptical arc commands correctly, when an arc flag is next to another number without any space, comma or negative sign between them. You can circumvent this problem by using your favorite SVG editing software to re-encode the paths. We've known about this problem since at least 2019, but it always takes a while for bug fixes to make their way through the pipeline. Nothing to worry about. TilmannR (talk) 19:22, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
Oh, the Naval Jack had a different rendering bug caused by "A use element xlink:href links to another use element". You can find lists of common SVG problems at Help:SVG, en:Wikipedia:SVG_help and Commons:Commons_SVG_Checker/KnownBugs. TilmannR (talk) 19:40, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

Canadian buildings with microwave antennas on the roof

I'm trying to expand the article on DATAPAC, a microwave-relay data network in Canada. During the 1980s it was common to see dozens of dishes connecting financial company buildings to the network, and in Toronto the most connected was First Canadian Place whose roof was covered in them. I have looked through various categories on Toronto buildings, microwave connections and First Canadian Place, but I cannot find an image from that era that shows the roof.

These were just as common on other buildings across Canada, I'm sure there are examples in Montreal and Calgary that would be just as iconic. But I don't know these cities nearly as well. If anyone reading this is from those areas and remembers that era, perhaps you might suggest some images I could look at? Thanks!

How to share my image?

This is the image: fy:W:Ofbyld:Kladblok.png
This is the result: Currently, I can't share the image on Commons.
Background: Someone in the past "didn't understand the language of the Wiki he stole files from". Let's keep it at that. I largely gave up on the file sharing issue, as it clearly resulted in illegal images. But by know, I expect you figured out how to deal with such things, so I'm trying to upload a simple image, and hopefully we'll find out what you did.
(I expect I mis-coded the images link, but the information is there; it's just that newstyle comments don't let me see.) Aliter (talk) 18:09, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Indeed, Kladblok. I never saw any specific need to share it beyond fy:W, but it may serve a purpose here. Plus, there might be other notepads that need a heading. So, it works if you pretend that Commons is in everybody's namespace? Does that work for everything, or do I do need it for other projects? fy:Wikt:Sanna does use the project. So, how does this work if I explicitly do want to say Wikipedia? But, yes: That one. Aliter (talk) 21:01, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
  • Not sure what you mean by "I can't share the image on Commons." If you are just saying that Commons cannot see the image on a different wiki, that is absolutely true. Other WMF wikis can use images that are on Commons, but not vice versa. But, assuming that the licensing on fy-wiki is valid, there is no reason in the world that you couldn't upload it to Commons, presumably using {{CC-0}} in place of a license. - Jmabel ! talk 20:50, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
You have some sort of a scheme for getting Commons to find images on other mediawiki, as I understand it. Just like uploading from your desktop, if it's not the desktop it's on. That's all I know, and that it said it couldn't get it. I hope it's unrelated to the earlier problems, as that means you (you-all) found a way to resolve the chaos at Fy:, or at least accepted it as an issue not worth bothering about. But if here's my innocence of those times resurfacing: If it doesn't allow me to upload it, I assume it means it doesn't want to upload it, and if I down- and up-load it's going to complain I'm creating a copy. Of course, I am. The image on Fy: is as close to an original as it's going to get. Unless some broken down computer here holds some graphics files, there will not be anything more original than what Fy: have. So, what I am trying to do, I guess, is to get Commons to recognise that is has the right to do so. (See, the difference between sharing in PD, and actually sharing with everybody: I declared it PD, since I couldn't declare it free of rights. As a result, I am still its caretaker.) Well, did I blabber away enough to get you an idea of the problem? Feel free to ask me again tomorrow. Aliter (talk) 21:26, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

The Frysk Wikipedia (that is obviously about the Frysk language of northern Netherlands, and not about the version of Frysk spoken in Northern Germany) claims on its main page that it is GNU/FDL licensed (it also includes the note at the bottom that it is cc-by-sa-3.0). Many information looks heavily outdated. (And the image in question appears not to be specially interesting). --C.Suthorn (talk) 22:23, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Yes? You must be German to make that comment. I didn't say "Frysk" anywhere, and even so in Northern Frsian they call it "Northern" and either "Frees" or "Friis". Their pronunciation of the name is with a long vowel. It's only here in the west that we say "Frysk", with a short vowel. But what I did say was "fy:", which is clearly not a way to spell "Frr:". Still, I'll note on a talk page that there are people who would like a clearer indication of Frysk being Frysk. Where does it say that the front page is "GNU/FDL", where does it say it is any form of CC, as I don't see that either, and which one would be the current license and can we get there from what we claim to be? Yes, FY: is a small W:, and today I would not have tried to breath life into it. Still, is that a reason for some ten users to stop working on it? What would help would be, being specific. "Much information looks seriously outdated" doesn't even tell me if you're complaining about us being unable to keep up with "We think we will force you to learn things anew." or about the world not stopping while we try to catch up. And what part of "I never saw any specific need to share it beyond fy:W, but it may serve a purpose here." is giving you problems? Still, if you're volunteering to help get the Wiki less far behind, just say so. Aliter (talk) 18:22, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

@Aliter: I'm almost completely confused. Instead of talking about what Commons "knows" or what some unidentified entity has prevented you from doing in the past: what is it that you want to accomplish? Do you want this file transferred to Commons, or are do you want something else and, if so, what? - Jmabel ! talk 02:15, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

A bit of a puzzle. OK, let's say: I would like fy:Ofbyld:Kladblok.png to become addressable by all mediawiki. Aliter (talk) 18:22, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
I think he wants the picture to stay on Frysk wikipedia and not on Commons Trade (talk) 02:24, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
Yet, she says "I'm trying to upload a simple image". But you're right in the sense that I want the image on Fy: to remain available as the original. I have seen too many images on Commons that had become unsourced, as they were uploaded from their W: (see, that's the thing I try to do), to Commons with the W:-version specified as the original, after which the W: deleted that original, since it now was on Commons. Right; back to checking plurals on fy:Wikt:. See you tomorrow. Aliter (talk) 18:22, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
Exporting an image to Commons
I assume "Export to Commons" is what you are looking for. The export retains all the version history of a media file when moving the image to commons. I have checked, your image in fy shows the export tab, you can simply use it. That is, if I assume correctly what you are after. If you do you will absolutly need to attach a machine readable license template to it (there is non in your image at fy. At commons a bot would mark it for deletion within an hour). And I don't know if dutch law actually allows to declare a work that meets the treshhold of originalty to be declared PD (If yes, you can use one of the PD templates, otherwise you could use cc-zero). C.Suthorn (talk) 18:41, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
A quick reply as this resulted in the message I didn't see on Commons. Cl, icking that tab results in: "This file cannot be imported to Wikimedia Commons because it is not marked with a compatible licence. Wikimedia Commons does not allow such files. This might be resolvable, but most probably means the file is not compatible. Please consult the Wikimedia Commons community policy and talk pages about licensing.". That was the one. Obviously, someone who has not done this before, will basically not know what the writers are talking about, and will get ganged upon by three for saying "Frisian" even if fact they don't, etc. Yes, I expect you're assuming correctly, as it would explain why I could not find what function on Commons was causing this effect. So, this would suggest in the early days of new license, this did not work as it does now. (I may have to modify my comments on my talk page about that, it this turns out to work now.) So, now that we determined what the problem was: What do we need to change it? I'm not sure how this would even work for an old license with many authors, but for now, we're looking at something simple: One author. What will we need? And it's time for groceries, so I expect I'll see you again tomorrow. Aliter (talk) 19:22, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
@Aliter: as was said above, given that you were the author in the first place and given your intention to put this in the public domain, use {{CC-0}}, which is the cleanest way to fulfill that intention or, if it legally can't be placed in the public domain, give equivalent rights. - Jmabel ! talk 00:28, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: There appears to be no such template on fy:.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 06:41, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: even if it's not on fy-wiki, there's nothing to stop placing {{CC-0}} on the page, which is presumably what the transfer code will check. - Jmabel ! talk 17:41, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
So, actually using a specific Public Domain template is a problem, but some code <nowiki>{{CC-0}}</nowiki>, which in itself has no meaning is preferable? OK, I'll see what we can do. Aliter (talk) 19:43, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I tried, that didn't work. :(   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:34, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
Weird. Pinging @Aliter, are you concerned to have the history on Commons contain anything beyond what date you first uploaded to fy-wiki? I'm presuming not, since you had intended to dedicate this as PD, anyway. - Jmabel ! talk 23:46, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
So, is it really so much of a saving of time, to delete my message even though it is clearly relevant to the topic but I just lost my cookie. (What ever the local term is.)
So what is template "pinging" supposed to differently from just using @ ? But I don't know what you're asking. Jeff demonstrated typical foreigners behaviour, by coming in to try something on our wikipedia, without bothering to tell US if it was a success or a failure, no apology, nothing. Are you surprised people at Fy: assume that anything from elsewhere will cause a problem? But, Jmabel, I don't know whether you are asking if I consider a test-case not functioning as a test-case being a problem. Obviously I would. So, I would expect there must be some significance in the test Jeff performed. So, you judge it as "Weird". Should I still continue trying to get permission for your CC-0 message, or has that train of testing broken down? Aliter (talk) 22:40, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
@Aliter: there are no deep differences between {{Ping}}, {{Pinging}}, {{Re}}, overt link to user page with or without "@", and several other ways to tag someone in a message. The only thing I can think of is that some of these (e.g. {{Ping}}) automatically put a colon after the link.
We established (above) that the automated method will not work to move this particular file to Commons. I gather that you still want it moved. What I am asking is whether you are concerned about preserving its history in the version that ends up on Commons, beyond crediting you and indicating what date you first uploaded to fy-wiki? If that suffices, then it's pretty easy to do the move by other means. If not, then this has been all sufficiently out of proportion to an effort to move a not terribly important file to Commons that I think I'm done trying to help with this one. - Jmabel ! talk 23:17, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi Yhyhyhyhy. That would depend on various things. It's best to assume that most images you find online are protected by copyright and then work from there as explained in COM:NETCOPYVIO. If you can provide a link for the images you want to use, then it might be easier for someone to give you a more detailed assessment. Without knowing more about the images, the best answer anyone can probably give is that most likely you shouldn't upload them to Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:34, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
In other words, and admittedly slightly less polite (but I think clearer): when a random person says something is "not copyrighted," they are usually showing that they don't know much about copyright, not that the thing in question is not copyrighted. So please indicate what images you are talking about. - Jmabel ! talk 16:13, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

Request to delete temporary file

I needed to replace File:Cifrão_symbol.svg with a revised version (currently at File:Cifrão_symbol-temp.svg to facilitate verification before committing, as this image is widely used.) That work is complete (see template talk:dollar2 on en.wiki) and I have replaced File:Cifrão_symbol.svg with the new version. Consequently there is a file duplication warning. The test version, Cifrão_symbol-temp.svg, may now be deleted, please. John Maynard Friedman (talk) 10:42, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

I see from a previous answer that I can mark it myself to be deleted but I can't find that option anywhere? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 10:44, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
@John Maynard Friedman: I think the right thing to do in this case is to tag it with {{Duplicate}}, which requests that the file be deleted and replaced with a redirect to another copy. So use the "edit" link on File:Cifrão_symbol-temp.svg and add {{duplicate|Cifrão_symbol.svg|Please delete temporary duplicate used for testing}}. You might also request deletion under speedy deletion criterion G1 (test page) or G7 (own unused recent upload), but I don't think those would be as appropriate. --bjh21 (talk) 13:51, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @Yhyhyhyhy: : it's not clear what exactly you are asking here. If you are asking can you offer your own photographs under some license on Shutterstock and also upload them under a free license here on Commons, yes, you can, though if you place it on that other site first you should go through the process described at COM:VRT to establish that it is your own work.
  • In general, we cannot accept third-party images coming from Shutterstock, etc., because they do not offer licenses compatible with the requirements of COM:L.
  • I have no idea what you mean by listing various version numbers for a "kind of copyright". Copyright doesn't have a version number. Some licenses have version numbers, but listing a version number means nothing without also saying what license. - Jmabel ! talk 20:51, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @Davey2010: I'm not sure what you mean by "replace a copyrighted map on a Commons image." Generally, any "copyrighted map" on Commons should be free-licensed, so there should be no particular reason to replace it.
  • As far as I can think, OSM content should be freely usable on Commons. See Category:OpenStreetMap for many examples; you may want to look at the licensing on those. - Jmabel ! talk 20:56, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

Transparent PNGs do not render in various image viewers

I tried to share the Wikipedia article for "Robin Hood" - but the image used there is a transparent PNG - which renders on several popular graphics viewers and editors as a black square.

So, I use Paint.NET to convert this image to a (non-transparent) JPEG. I was tempted to upload the resulting image but hesitate because this image is widely used. Do others agree that the transparent (why transparent?) PNG should be replaced with a non-transparent image that renders on all graphic viewers and editors?

Enquire (talk) 22:52, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

@Jmabel: The issue is that transparent PNG images do not render as expected in some graphics programs, or when sharing on social media. I am not sure if the issue is specific to transparent PNG or if the same issue arises, say, for a transparent GIF. So, perhaps you would be kind enough to explain why a PNG could not be replaced with a JPG. I am not sure if the issue is with PNG or transparency - I suspect it is the latter. If so, replacing the transparent PNG with an opaque PNG would, presumably resolve the issue. Uploading a "derivative" JPG would be beside the point, especially if the issue that I raised at the outset is not resolved.
Enquire (talk) 02:14, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
@Enquire: uploading a new version of a file only works with the same filetype. Yes, you can upload an opaque PNG over a transparent PNG, and in this case I can't really see any good reason for it to have been transparent in the first place. Pinging @Beleg Tâl, is there any particular reason for that? - Jmabel ! talk 04:40, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
It is transparent so that it can be displayed correctly regardless of the colour of the background. Lots of people have custom skins to view Wikisource with a greyish or greenish background to prevent eye strain. Even the default Wikisource skins have slightly different shades of off-white backgrounds. Beleg Tâl (talk) 23:41, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
By the way: "several popular graphics viewers and editors" is kind of vague and doesn't let anyone else look into the problem. When reporting things like this, it's really useful to give an example. - Jmabel ! talk 04:44, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello Wikimedia Commons, I've looked at all the relevant search-help pages and the advanced search options, but perhaps I've missed something, as I can't find a way to search the Commons by the author. How does one do so? WineMel (talk) 17:19, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

@WineMel, @Davey2010, specifically en:Help:Searching#Searching_for_a_specific_person's_contributions: "there's no direct way to search for something like insource:foo author:person".
I tried searching for "sodacan" and "author:sodacan" (just as an example) and the results are quite similar. TilmannR (talk) 17:42, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
So there isn't any way to search for specifically someone's contribs on the Commons because of how it's indexed? That's a little surprising... I don't want to come off as insolent, but I thought there'd be a way some time ago, and it's 2023... WineMel (talk) 18:07, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
If by "someones's contributions" you mean a Commons user (account) contributions, that would be a different question than what could be understood of the original question. Depending what you are looking for, e.g. Special:Contributions/WineMel for a complete list of all types of non-deleted contributions (replace "WineMel" with the username), or the same refined for specific namespaces, or the same refined by dates, or Special:ListFiles/WineMel for a list of non-deleted files, or Special:Log/WineMel for a list of all uploaded files including deleted files, or search with username + keyword for a specific topic. Telling who the target is and what you expect would make it easier to provide a proper answer instead trying to guess. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:10, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
Hello Asclepias,

Whatever short name I choose for the pictures, I am getting an error with LTA 270. I am trying to upload pictures for the Wiki Loves Folklore photographic contest. i want to upload a lost commercial of wallace and gromit from japan to here.Is there any way to know if it is copyrighted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yhyhyhyhy (talk • contribs) 12:35, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi Yhyhyhyhy. Most TV commercials are likely going to be protected by copyright; so, it's best to assume that this one is too and work from there. Where did you find the commercial if it's lost? Is the commercial available somewhere online? Can you provide any other information about? Do you know what year it's from? -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:07, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

I found it in the lost media wiki

Anyways The commercial in question had Wallace and Gromit riding on their motorbike with a stunt team of sheep (similar to their animated short A Close Shave). They hit a tortoise (which bears a striking resemblance to Frank the Tortoise from Creature Comforts, another Aardman/Nick Park creation) and they all fall off but then land again in a vertical line with Wallace and Gromit on top, Shaun at the bottom steering and the tortoise on Shaun's head serving as a helmet. Also it was from 2000-2001 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yhyhyhyhy (talk • contribs)
There is literally no chance that is not copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 16:04, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
I realized it was from youtube — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yhyhyhyhy (talk • contribs) 06:24, 11 February 2023 (UTC)
The commercial might've been uploaded to YouTube, but it's not really from YouTube unless YouTube is claiming to be the original creator of the commercial. Content uploaded to YouTube is very often not OK for Wikipedia or Commons because it stuff usually uploaded by someone other than the original copyright holder without the consent of the original copyright holder. If you found the commercial on an official Wallace & Gromit YouTube channel that controlled by the copyright holders of Wallace & Gromit, then maybe there's a chance that it could be OK for Wikipedia or Commons; if it's just a YouTube channel controlled by some fan or some random person, then there's pretty zero chance that it would be OK for Wikipedia or Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:26, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

I merely talked about VRT because I wanted to upload artwork with a pending permission request ticket that I just sent a letter representing an artist via e-mail during practice two days ago. It was from one of the Wikimedia VRT.
The Harvett Vault (user; talk) 02:00, 10 February 2023 (UTC); edited: 23:16, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
@The Harvett Vault: Lets assume the artist in question was Pablo Picasso. In that case he would send a permission to VRT from his email "pablo@pablo-picasso.com". If you send the permission from your address "me@picasso-fans.org", then you could prove that you are authorized to give that permission by sending a link to "http;//pablo-picasso.com/i-hereby-grant-picasso-fans-dot-com-permission-to-grant-permissions-for-all-my-work". Fixing another editor's licensing information

File:Marine Sea Spider.jpg has been declared by the uploader to be "own work" but is actually taken from WoRMS [1]. Since the file is BY-NC-SA there, this is not a fundamental problem, but the licensing needs to be amended. I tried to do that in the source text but was defeated by the templates. I'm only used to entering this kind of information via the wizard. Pointers and/or a quick fix please? --Elmidae (talk) 15:47, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

It is a problem, since BY-NC-SA is not one of the licenses accepted by Commons. It should be marked as copyvio, or at least sent to DR.--Prosfilaes (talk) 15:59, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Crowedstrike logo.png

I am not paid by any company, I just want to practice my skills on the Wikipedia platform.

I realized CrowdStrike has updated its logo on its website, but the logo on Wikipedia is outdated and I would like to update it.

Do I need a license for this logo? (it is a public traded company). If yes, where and how can I get this license from? (it is confusing)

Thanks

--~~~~ —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.107.215.150 (talk) 05:41, 12 February 2023 (UTC)

Whether it's a publicly traded company is not relevant here. Per Commons licensing policy we would either need evidence that the copyright owner released the logo under a free license (no such evidence seems to exist) or you need to show that the logo is "in the public domain in at least the United States and in the source country of the work". In this specific case the company is conveniently located in the United States, so you can look up "COM:TOO USA" to find that it's a country with a relatively high threshold of originality. Since Crowedstrike logo.png consists only of text and two wavy lines, it's almost certainly below the threshold and therefore in the public domain. I used the {{PD-textlogo}} template to fill in the missing licensing information, and since the logo happens to be a trademark, I also added the {{Trademarked}} template. Photo of a Historical Figure

I'm trying to upload a photo of Charles "Red Flag" Taylor. He was an American communist and I am unsure if I am allowed to upload this photo since I do not own the rights to it, but it seems like it would be in the public domain since a news article is using it and I can't find watermarks on any photos of him. Mr. Gibberish (talk) 00:20, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

@Mr. Gibberish: was that news article by any chance published in 1928 or earlier, in the U.S.? That would certainly put the photo in the public domain. If not, could you please be more specific? It wouldn't be surprising if there were a photo of him that is in the public domain, but it also wouldn't be surprising if there isn't. - Jmabel ! talk 00:55, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Hi Mr. Gibberish. A news article using it wouldn't necessarily make the photo public domain. Is there any information about the photo (e.g. where it comes from) included in the article. Sometimes newspapers and news websites will attribute the sources of photos they use in their articles. Not being watermarked also would not necessarily make the photo public domain. Whether a photo is in the public domain can depend on many things; for example, who took the photo, where they took it, when they took it, when it was first published, is the photographer dead, when did they die, and so on. In addition, Commons will require the photo to be public domain not only under US copyright law, but also the copyright law of the country where the photo was first published. This can be hard to assess without knowing more about the en:provenance of the photo. Perhaps you can provide a link to the news article where the photo is being used? This might help someone figure out whether the photo is OK for Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:01, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
The news article was published on October 20th, 2010 but the photo was taken Circa 1918

OK, so one thing we can say for sure: the picture published in 1930 will certainly be in the public domain starting 1 January 2026. Further, it is most likely in the public domain now, because it is very unlikely that anyone renewed copyrights for Producers News, which in that era in the U.S. would have been necessary to preserve copyrights past 1958 (28 years). I know there is a way to verify non-renewal, but for that era I'm not sure how to do it. Carl, sorry to bother you on this but I imagine you would know exactly what to do to work this out.
Also, if we could establish that the "circa 1918" photo was published in the U.S. any time up to including 1927, that would put it in the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 03:04, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank You! This has been really helpful. Mr. Gibberish (talk) 04:02, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

@Mr. Gibberish: that means you can upload it as {{PD-US-not renewed}}. - Jmabel ! talk 06:14, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
@Mr. Gibberish: It appears that the book is a few days off about the date of publication of this issue of the newspaper, which actually was 19 September 1930. The Library of Congress has a collection of the newspaper, viewable online. This issue can be viewed there. As could be expected, there does not seem to be a copyright notice. This means the photo is in the public domain for this reason and if it is uploaded to Commons the template PD-US-no notice can be used. It is possible that other photos of this person could be found in other issues of the newspaper. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:27, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

Is Psycho (1960) in the public domain?

I'd like to check before potentially uploading a clip from the movie, to help the Wikipedia page. I've been researching for all of about five minutes, and I can't find anything concrete, saying yes or no--except for one page, saying that all Alfred Hitchcock films are under copyright until 2050. Klee Bakudan (talk) 19:46, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @Klee Bakudan: I literally cannot imagine a reason this would be in the public domain. Why would you think it even might be? - Jmabel ! talk 22:17, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
  • Hitchcock died in 1980, so if we naively apply the "70 p.m.a." rule, we do end up at 2050. Unfortunately it's a little more complicated than that (see Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States). E.g. Psycho Theatrical Trailer (1960).webm is in the public domain for lack of a copyright notice. A work that was first published during 1928–63 with notice and renewal is copyrighted for 95 years. I didn't actually check whether the copyright was renewed, but assuming it was, Psycho might be in the public domain after 2055. TilmannR (talk) 22:46, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

Adding new text to the Union Square San Francisco Wiki Page

A couple of years ago, I created a wiki account and used the editing tool to add a new section to the Union Square San Francisco page. I followed the steps to upload the addition and was able to see it on the wiki page for Union Square San Francisco. However, today that section does not appear. Can you confirm if your administration people have a record of this upload, or can confirm if the addition was rejected for some reason. @Arnhwy: Welcome to Wikimedia Commons! You can use the Upload Wizard to upload files, but please be aware of the licensing policy: Either the logo needs to be sufficiently simple to be in the public domain or you need to provide evidence that the copyright holder of the file released it under a free license (i.e. modification and commercial re-use of the image are allowed). If evidence for a free license is not publicly available, you can send evidence to the Volunteer Response Team instead. If the logo is not freely licensed, you are not allowed to upload it here, but you might be able to upload it directly onto Wikipedia as "fair use" (see Wikipedia:Non-free content). TilmannR (talk) 14:17, 12 February 2023 (UTC)
If you upload "directly into Wikipedia", you have to choose what language versions to upload to. The linked policy is just for Wikipedia in English; other language editions have different policies, and only some accept "fair use content" at all. –LPfi (talk) 16:12, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

@EthanBGamer1: Commons:FAQ#How do I close my account? TilmannR (talk) 14:04, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Accounts at any Wikimedia-site (including commons and wikipedia) cannot be deleted at all. You can ask for your account to get renamed (but all your edits will be associated with your new user name). You can request to delete all pages in your own user name space. You can blank all pages in your user name space. You can retire your account (for example by forgetting your password or setting it to something you will not remember). You can ask (while still logged in!) an admin to block your account with the rationale retired account. You can post a message on your user page "retired account". You can delete the email address from your account (but without an email addresse there is no way to set back the password and you will be locked out of the account forever unless you remember the password). C.Suthorn (talk) 14:09, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
I really recommend against killing the email address, unless the specific reason you want to close the account is to stop receiving harassing emails. - Jmabel ! talk 16:13, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
+1 - Deleting your email would be rather extreme and it's not something I would recommend, If you're getting harassing emails you can set up filters so future emails could go to spam/trash but of course that can be bypassed, failing that create a disposable email address via your email and use it here. –Davey2010Talk 16:25, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
C.Suthorn (talk) 17:50, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Summarizing the above, User:C.Suthorn is basically saying that the one good reason to remove the email address from your account is if you are concerned about Wikimedia Commons being hacked and your email address being obtained that way. - Jmabel ! talk 19:22, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

I just noticed that the user asking this question appears to have no other contributions on Commons. Right now, the tool that would let me look for global contributions is down. Pinging @EthanBGamer1, if you really haven't done anything on WMF projects then, sure, remove your email as well, and expect that if you come back you'll start an account under a new name. No one is going to have something important to communicate to you about an account with no significant activity ever. - Jmabel ! talk 19:26, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

It is of course possible that the account was set up just to ask this question, with the issue being some other account not to be disclosed. As for the e-mail, there is a setting in your preferences about allowing people to send you e-mail, as C.Suthorn writes above. There are also settings for whether to get alerts by e-mail. If you disable all those, you won't get any e-mail messages, but can still use your e-mail to change your password and thus make any other changes you want (such as requesting deletion or undeletion of your user pages). –LPfi (talk) 16:25, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Right to use a picture in an article

I have a picture of a painting from 1763. The picture was found in archives belonging to a department in France. Am I free to use it in an article? D8dek2lDe (talk) 21:25, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

I would like to add the way I obtained the picture is by screenshotting the picture of the painting on the online version of the archive, if that changes anything. D8dek2lDe (talk) 21:28, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Yes. This (French?) art is in the public domain in France and the United States, so faithful reproductions of the painting are as well. Where it gets tricky is that you can always reproduce the painting itself as a 2-D surface in the public domain, but if you take a picture of it in some 3-D context (e.g. how it is arranged in a gallery or if it has a 3-D frame), then that image could be under copyright. The solution in that case would be to crop out other elements to just have the face of the painting itself. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:46, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! the picture is perfectly 2D it seems. D8dek2lDe (talk) 21:59, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

@D8dek2lDe: Definitely do not tick "the images is mine". If you answer correctly (for the painting; faithful copies don't create any new copyright), the wizard should guide you through. - Jmabel ! talk 22:19, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
but there is no other way to launch the upload than to tick that box. The wizard tells me I can upload pictures of old art but there is no info on what to tick D8dek2lDe (talk) 22:50, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
my bad, I figured it out. Thank you both for the help. D8dek2lDe (talk) 22:52, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Please always tell the solution you found, for the other readers who might be interested, and for those who tried to help you. In this case the solution is ticking the "not my work" box and proceed from there. If none of the suggested options fit, tick "another reason, to be added to the page" (or something like that, I don't use English as my interface language). –LPfi (talk) 16:32, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

When I go to upload it says I cannot upload an image that isn't mine without the creators permission, what if it is a photo of a person for their Wikipedia article. Do I still need permission? ReadRead0109802 (talk) 19:09, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Yes. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:29, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
And, in particular, that permission needs to come from the copyright-holder, who is typically not the subject of the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 19:45, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Canvassing

Do we have any policies/guidelines about using Commons to canvass/campaign votes on other Wikipedias? — Golden call me maybe? 19:36, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @Golden: Normally shouldn't be done, although in some cases an unbiased request for participation in a discussion is in order (e.g. I could imagine coming to Commons if a Freedom of Panorama question arose on a Wikipedia). In general, on any WMF project, if you are canvassing outside of a discussion for comment on that discussion, you should say so in the discussion itself. - Jmabel ! talk 19:44, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I recently witnessed a case in which a user was using Commons to encourage another user to join a discussion on another Wikipedia with a biased comment. What I was wondering is whether these kind of cases are reportable on Commons. — Golden call me maybe? 19:52, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
    • Most likely. But if you think someone's conduct is inappropriate, but not to the point of meriting a block (which is most likely the case here, unless the account is used only or primarily for this sort of thing), you really could warn them of the inappropriateness of their conduct yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 19:56, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

helping a living artist upload pictures to wikimedia commons

I am trying to help an artist friend upload photos of some of his works to wikimedia commons. He has supplied me with photos of the paintings. How do I get the proper license attached to the photos (for example Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International). I have helped him draft an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, using the template from https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Email_templates, and attached the images to the email. Have not sent it yet. They say that these emails take up to seven days for a reply. Is this the best way to proceed? Paulusjharp (talk) 11:59, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @Paulusjharp: it is important that the email come from the artist, not from you.
  • Other than that, yes, this is the right way to do this.
  • Seven days may be a bit optimistic, but given that the email is in English it might be realistic; there's quite a backup for some languages.
  • Once the email is sent, you can upload. Remember to include {{subst:PP}} as part of each upload. - Jmabel ! talk 16:23, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thanks, will get him to send the email, then will proceed with the upload. How does wiki commons match the images attached to the copyright letter with the images I will upload? Paulusjharp (talk) 09:18, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
@Paulusjharp: It is usually done the other way. First, you upload the files and you include the template Permission pending in the description page of each file. And then the owner of the copyright sends the email in which they include links to the uploaded files and they confirm the license. It is not useful then to include another copy of the files in the email. Please see the instructions on the template Permission pending. It can work also the way you suggested, but it is probably just more complicated. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:34, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
"include the template Permission pending" is technically true, but a bit misleading. The way to do this is {{subst:PP}}, as stated above. - Jmabel ! talk 16:11, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Paul Gasq sculptures

I'm writing an article about the French sculptor Paul Gasq. I've found three pictures of his sculptures on the internet that are not in Wikipedia Commons. Can I upload them? They would be needed in a table of his works. The sculptures were sculpted at the end of the 19th century. Thanks for your answer!Mirabella (talk) 09:37, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

@Mirabella: If the sculptures were published before 1928, you can take and publish your own pictures of them or pictures that are in the public domain or that you find with a free licence. You cannot upload pictures that are not free and on which you do not have rights. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:18, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Copyright

Are street view images on google maps allowed? Thehistorianisaac (talk) 14:13, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Usually not. The bottom right corner of Streetview typically shows a copyright notice and Google doesn't allow unrestricted reuse of their images, which makes them incompatible with our licensing policy. There are some panoramas on Commons, which are under a free license and also have been uploaded to Streetview (e.g. Category:Spherical Panoramas by User:Capricorn4049), but as far as I can tell Google never explicitly tells you that a panorama is freely licensed, so it's never a good source for images. TilmannR (talk) 15:42, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
@Thehistorianisaac: Or to put it differently: someone can both place an image on Commons and give it to Google for Streetview, but Google is not usable as a source for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 16:15, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons are two different websites. If you have problems with English Wikipedia you need to take it up there. Sorry Trade (talk) 15:02, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
Just to clarify: The user page has been deleted ("G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion") and the user Evegah mobility is indef. blocked on en.wikipedia ("Promotional username, promotional edits"). TilmannR (talk) 15:10, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
@Evegah mobility: have you read en-wiki's policy on conflicts of interest? It looks like you were probably violating it. Once you've familiarized yourself with that, there is some chance you could get your account unblocked there, but no chance that it would magically become OK to write an en-wiki article about a company with which you are connected. - Jmabel ! talk 16:24, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Better file rejected

I tried to upload a new and better version of an SVG file (from "Upload a new version of this file"), but Wikimedia didn't allow it. It gave a message: "If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding." So the licence is the same as the old version (CC BY-SA 4.0). The new file is in png format and instructions say that this file type is OK. Why didn't the uploader allow an update? Jari Rauma (talk) 15:40, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

Technically, it is not possible to overwrite a file of a format type (e.g. svg) with a file of another format type (e.g. png). (Overwriting a svg with a png would not sound like a good thing, even if it were possible.) Please upload as a new separate file and indicate source and license. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:10, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. But your answer contradicts the way that svg can overwrite png. And why wikimedia recommends it? Don't be afraid to face the truth about the bad marketing. Jari Rauma (talk) 16:17, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
@Jari Rauma: No, you cannot upload an SVG to overwrite a PNG, either. You can replace a PNG in an article with an SVG, but that is an entirely different matter. Where an SVG is appropriate, it is preferred, because it shows equally well at any size.- Jmabel ! talk 16:23, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
@Asclepias, yeah I am not sure where it says that (or says the opposite of that) in our policies or technical docs. Could you point out a link to us please? I've been all over the FAQ and Commons:Overwriting existing files. Elizium23 (talk) 16:24, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
I apologize, I remembere wrong. But here is your adcvertisement to redraw a 20 kB picture in svg. And in some private discussion in Wikimedia recommended me to use svg for better quality. Here I give you counter-advertisement. Here is an svg picture, painstakingly produced. And here is same picture with less work. But you gon't care about work when rou advertise svg side by side with superior png. Jari Rauma (talk) 18:01, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
OK, I think, i see, what happened: you navigated to the svg file, than clicked on upload a new version, than choose a png file from you local disk (and maybe it had the file extension svg, but in either case was a png) the file was uploaded, MW identified it as png and assigned the extension png to it - so it was not an upload of a new version, but an upload of a new file. new versions do not accept a new description, but new files need a description including a license. so it was correctly tagged as having no license. Does someone know how to fix this? If someone does and could do so, or instruct me how to do so, it would be much appreciated. Thanks. The Boston Railfan (talk) 20:41, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

If you give right RGB colors, I could change it easily and upload a new version. By the way, Corel Draw marketed vector graphics in 20 tears ago. It was then a huge failure. Now Inkscape is marketing abot a asme kind system. Experts advice to marketeers: "Being XML-based it was a terrible idea from the start. The main point here is that XML is neither human-friendly nor machine-friendly, and it never has been." I made just a png map 3672 × 4708 resolution and it took only 277 KB memory. SVG is techinally little better only in resollutions 20,000 × 20,000 pixels, but pngs are much easier to make. Jari Rauma (talk) 16:02, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
I'm not sure what the exact RGB codes would be, but the HEX Color is #FF7900. Note that the text also needs to be changed (i.e. it should read "Metro-North Port Jervis (Orange) Line" in addition to being an orange background). The Boston Railfan (talk) 21:36, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
It's too simple, so Wikimedia perhaps deletes it. The original font family is perhaps commercial. I can't blend Windows fonts into a different font family, so I used Arial (anti-aliased), in all the text. I hope it's okay. Jari Rauma (talk) 19:06, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

Fix information and categories

I cannot figure out how to fix the info and categories on this file: File:Dan Sullivan 2021.PNG. Can someone help? Thanks // sikander { talk } 🦖 02:12, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @Sikander: That's because instead of uploading an information template, User:Mycranthebigman transcluded in the content of an entirely different, irrelevant page. So we have no meaningful author, no meaningful description, and no valid permission. Pinging @Mycranthebigman appears to be an active user. The ping here should get his attention to fix this bad upload, since no one else has any way to know where he got the photo. If he doesn't, then this should be deleted for lack of valid permission. The picture has been there over 3 months, so I'll give him 24 hours (it isn't a lot more likely to "leak out" onto the Internet in the next 24 hours than the last 3 months). - Jmabel ! talk 03:24, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Woops. It seems I've just used the info of the full file rather than copying and marking it down with the extracted image template. I will correct this. Thank you so much for notifying me!

Your profile goes on your User page, it does not go on Wikidata and Commons mainspaces. Wikimedia is not social networking. IIUC, you are permitted to have a limited number of freely-licensed self-portraits for your own use on your own user pages, but it is not customary for Wikidata editors, for example, to create an item about ourselves, nor is it customary for Commons contributors to have a personal category, except where it applies to media you've uploaded. Elizium23 (talk) 01:56, 18 February 2023 (UTC)

@Elizium23: I didn't disagree with your, nor argued about keeping the category. I just said rather posting on my talkpage, you could have just told me here and I would have deleted it myself, as I didn't know about it. Because I tried to follow every rule, and kept my talk page clean. Also, you should give a chance to correct something than doing something negative upfront. It demotivates people.--Fabian Roudra Baroi (talk) 03:35, 18 February 2023 (UTC)

I understand your feelings, and talking to you personally would have been preferable. However, administrators and other curators have a backlog, and writing personal messages requires more time than using the automated tools, the messages of which may sound blunt. How to add title to my uploaded image?

How to add title to my uploaded image? SavijnaPrashanth (talk) 02:04, 20 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @SavijnaPrashanth: we don't generally have a notion here of pictures having a "title". We have "description" (in {{Information}} and other similar templates) and "caption" (part of Commons:Structured data). And of course there is the file name, which in some ways functions like a title. The only place I can think of titles as such arising is for artworks (in {{Artwork}}) but generally that's not relevant to photos taken by our own users. In theory you could add a title to {{Information}} using "other fields={{InFi|title|YOUR TITLE HERE}} - Jmabel ! talk 03:38, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
  • But now I look and see: you don't have any uploaded images on Commons. This question here appears to be your first edit. - Jmabel ! talk 03:40, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
  • I assume the filename would suffice for the OP: You choose the filename as part of the upload, with the default being the filename of the file on your device. Filenames created by the camera are usually worthless, so you need to come up with a better one, usually including the name of the subject and often some other relevant info (check any category for some examples of acceptable filenames, better of worse).
The CC licences include a mention of a "title", but it is very unusual to specify such a title for own photographs. If you are uploading a CC-licensed work that has a title, you can use the artwork template or the other_fields construct mentioned above.

How not to share my image?

Well, let's hope when weather improves, I can help you with your problem. For now, all I can make of it, is that you've been told fy:W:Ofbyld:Kladblok.png was a test case, but you don't want to handle it because it was a test case. Maybe sometime later we'll all grow up and not get angry when things don't go your way. Aliter (talk) 22:00, 20 February 2023 (UTC)

That link doesn't go anywhere, and there is not (and never has been) a File:Kladblok.png on Commons. There is a fy:Ofbyld:Kladblok.png uploaded by User:Aliter. We recently had a discussion here on the help desk in which, after many digressions on User:Aliter's part (and a problem where the usual automatic way of moving an image wouldn't work for this image that lacked a license template known to Commons) I asked Aliter whether they were "concerned about preserving its history in the version that ends up on Commons, beyond crediting you and indicating what date you first uploaded to fy-wiki" and added "If that suffices, then it's pretty easy to do the move by other means. If not, then this has been all sufficiently out of proportion to an effort to move a not terribly important file to Commons that I think I'm done trying to help with this one" and never got any answer. - Jmabel ! talk 00:04, 21 February 2023 (UTC)

I have a photo that is in vertical format. However, if I try to upload it, it's always turned into horizontal format. How can I prevent this? A Dorschel (talk) 15:39, 21 February 2023 (UTC)

@A Dorschel: You can check that the orientation information recorded in the exif data is consistent with the actual orientation of the image. Conflict between the two can happen for example if before upload the user manipulated the image with a software that changed the orientation of the image but did not change accordingly the orientation information recorded in the exif data. Please see Commons:Rotation for a more complete explanation. The four files you uploaded to Commons in 2021 and 2022 appear in the correct orientation. However please note that two of those files may have problems of a different nature. Apparently you would not be the author of the letter W.G. Sebald to Andreas Dorschel (2001) written by W. G. Sebald and probably not the owner of the copyright on his writing. Also, Gesine Probst Andreas Dorschel is a photo of a photo and, if you are the boy on the original photo, it seems unlikely that you took the original photo. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:58, 21 February 2023 (UTC)

Tannenberg_fett_(Schriftart).png [Tannenberg Bold (typeface)]

Sampler for Trebuchet MS

I would like to use https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Tannenberg_fett_(Schriftart).png for an article on en.wiki, but the description cautions against uploading it to Commons without a further check. Can anyone see what the issue is? The Tannenberg typeface was designed in 1935 and its designer died in 1983. Commons has many font samples where the designer is still alive, so that can't be the issue, can it? John Maynard Friedman (talk) 17:00, 19 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @John Maynard Friedman: I'm not sure what samples on Commons you are referring to, and how they may be licensed, but I'd expect that to be still copyrighted in the U.S. That's not to say that a small piece of text in the font is a problem, but that a text specifically designed to demonstrate the font probably is. - Jmabel ! talk 17:06, 19 February 2023 (UTC)
I can see that there are (at least!) two rights issues at stake here. First is the text in the sampler, as it is not "content free" like the Trebuchet sample. The uploader has placed in the public domain so that one is clear. The second is the formatting: the text is set in Tannenberg Bold, which is presumably still released under licence. I guess we may assume that the uploader doesn't have Linotype machine in the basement but produced it using Tannenberg.ttf on their home computer. Surely we must assume their good faith that they didn't use a bootleg copy?
Or is their another obstacle I haven't spotted? If it matters, the article I need it for is explicitly and exclusively about the font, so I think "fair use" applies? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 19:31, 19 February 2023 (UTC)
  • @John Maynard Friedman: I'm pretty sure you could use this under fair use on en-wiki, but of course that has nothing to do with Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 00:55, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
  • True. But if it could be taken up by Commons, it would be better all round, usable more widely. I'm still trying to understand what the difficulty is. How is it different from Trebuchet? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 01:08, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
@John Maynard Friedman: It's still copyrighted without a free license, unlike Trebuchet.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:00, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
@[[User:Jeff G.] I accept that. My difficulty was in teasing out the various elements. (a) The words used are not copyright: their author has put them in the public domain. (b) the picture of the words (the .png file) is also apparently not copyright, for the same reason - but fails because (c) the shapes of the letters used are however copyright designs, subject to licence. That was the key distinction that I missed. (d) the computer font used (tannenberg.ttf?) is separately copyright but is largely incidental to the question rather than central to it, which is what I mistakenly believed. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 14:36, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
@John Maynard Friedman The Trebuchet MS from your example was created by Microsoft for free use in the Web and therefore given a free license by its creator Microsoft and therefore is allowed in Commons. The Tannenberg font is a prototypical example of a Schaftstiefelgrotesk. Like other Schaftstiefelgrotesk it was created in Germany during the Nazi regime. Everywhere in the world at that time free licenses where unknown and nobody gave a free license to that font then or later. 70 years after the death of the creator it will become public domain. There is a sample of the font at german wikipedia: de:Datei:Tannenberg fett (Schriftart).png. It is marked as missing TOO in Germany and as not eligable to export to commons for copyright reasons. C.Suthorn (talk) 07:26, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
@User:C.Suthorn, ok, I think we may be getting closer to a resolution. What you say is certainly true and if I had tried to upload tanneberg.ttf, there could be no doubt that it would be an egregious breach of copyright. But I have not and will not.
Here I show two images currently on Commons that use Tannenberg typeface. Their content is out of copyright or otherwise in the public domain. Are they now to be removed from Commons because they use a typeface that is still in copyright? If so, what about the many thousands of text images on Commons where the content is public domain but the typeface used to print them is not?
So can you identify what is it about Tannenberg_fett_(Schriftart).png that makes it a problem for Commons but not the other Tannenberg typeface samples? (Tannenberg Fett.png; SC Dynamo Logo.svg (especially); FontSamples1930sGermany1.png (especially); DR 1935 577 Ostropa.jpg, many S-Bahn stations signs; etc etc - need I continue?) --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 10:53, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
Convenience links: User:John Maynard Friedman, please link files when mentioning them, don't just give the filenames as plain text.
Jmabel ! talk 16:17, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
File:Tannenberg Fett.png and File:FontSamples1930sGermany1.png are minimal. File:SC Dynamo Logo.svg may well be problematic because of the wings; again, the text is minimal. File:DR 1935 577 Ostropa.jpg happens to use this font in a work that has fallen into the public domain in Germany. I know that's a weird case, but I haven't ever heard of any court saying that the font's copyright status changes that. - Jmabel ! talk 16:21, 20 February 2023 (UTC)

Ok, I think we have taken this as far as we can and the question can be closed. I recognise that you guys have a lot more experience of copyright law than I do, so it doesn't matter if I fail to see the logic. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 16:33, 20 February 2023 (UTC)

Could you please give me the link and I can have him fill out what is needed? I've seen it once but it is not the easiest page to get to on the site. Thank you! Bigyankeesfan (talk) 22:57, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi Bigyankeesfan. Basically, the copyright holder's COM:CONSENT is going to need to be verified in some way. It's not enough for the copyright holder to give you permission; they need to essentially be willing to give the same consent to everyone else in the world to download the work from Commons and reuse pretty much for any purpose (including commercial and derivative uses). Moreover, once they do so, they can't change their mind at some later date. Finally, they will also be responsible for enforcing the terms of whatever license they choose. It's because of all these things, Commons wants to be as sure as it possibly can that the copyright holder is giving their consent.
You seem to have recently uploaded File:No More Masks Rally Blakeman.jpg and File:Bruce Profile Picture 2023.jpg. Are these the photos you're asking about here? Did you take these photos yourself? If you did, then you're the copyright holder and all you need to do is follow the guidance given here. If you didn't, you will need to follow the guidance given here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:35, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
Note also that you are not asking a photographer to "give his rights to Wikimedia Commons". You are asking a photographer to share his work under a free license - for example a Creative Commons attributions license - the photographer still owns rights to the photo, but has agreed that others may reuse the photo if they give proper attribution to them in accordance with the license. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 23:52, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

PD-USGov

May I use PD-USGov on photographs published by U.S. Embassies Flickr accounts? For example, U.S. Embassy Brasilia “licenses” its images in the public domain, therefore I could simply use {{PDMark-owner}}, but what about {{PD-USGov}}?

There’s also, for example, U.S. Embassy Tokyo. It licenses its images under CC BY-ND, not accepted by Commons. Should this license be ignored, as the photographs are produced by employees of the United States Government?

Best regards, RodRabelo7 (talk) 03:28, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Ruslik0, do you know if the ‘FlickreviewR 2’ is gonna identify it, or is uploading images from those Flickr accounts going to overload the queue of files imported from Flickr that need human review? RodRabelo7 (talk) 09:58, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
any claim of copyright on works produced by usa federal employees in the course of their employment is bogus. you can always replace those bogus claims with a variant of pd-usgov.
but be careful, like https://www.flickr.com/photos/usembassytokyo/42678450315/ was taken by https://andyboone.com/ , who's not a federal govt employee. whether that's pd is debatable, so it's best to avoid uploading it on commons. RZuo (talk) 10:07, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Official_Seal_of_the_Eastern_Orthodox_Church_of_France.png

Hello,

In the process of doing my series of Wikipedia articles on the Eastern Orthodox Church in France, in part of a wider project about religions in France, I uploaded a signature of a bishop that was used on his officials releases to the press. Someone from here helped me to solve the issue by putting a text saying that signatures were ok.

So I uploaded the Seal that is also to be found on every press release and document of the institution and tried not to bother here by putting the model for Seals, which I believe are in public property (?).

Sadly, a bot flagged it so if someone can help me resolve this issue, that would be perfect !

Thanks in advance AgisdeSparte (talk) 12:26, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

@AgisdeSparte: If, as you state, this version of the seal only dates from 16 September 2022 (which I doubt), it would still be copyrighted. Unless a free license is available (unlikely), you need to find out when it actually dates from.
"putting the model for Seals" is unclear and "in public property" is literally meaningless (did you mean to say "in the public domain"? That would be true for the overall design of the seal, but not a particular rendering).
My guess is that we can't keep this file, but if we could find a rendering of the seal from over 70 years ago (before 1953) that would be fine.

My University studies and degrees are from: the Pontifical Biblical Institute (Biblicum), Rome; Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule (Sankt Georgen), Frankfurt, Germany; Urbaniana University, Rome; and finally St Thomas Aquinas University (Angelicum), Rome. Unfortunately, only the last University is mentioned by you. My major degrees include: a Licentiate and specialisation in Biblical Sciences from the Biblicum, Rome and St Georgen, Frankfurt, respectively. Then two doctorates in Dogmatic Theology and Canon Law from the Urbaniana University and the Angelicum respectively. I would also like Hebrew (old and modern) to be mentioned among the languages I know. Thank you. Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, Apostolic Nuncio. 217.71.240.37 09:27, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

Change map from jpg to svg to later improve the result

I would like to use this 1968 map in Commons and create a new map in SVG format with different background colors of the historical districts of Suriname. A little bit like this map, so maintaining the city/village names, mayor roads, lakes, rivers etc. But then in SVG format of the situation in 1968. I guess I should start with a jpg to svg conversion tool to easily import the lines for the borders, rivers, roads, etc. in a vector/line format and then use a tool like Inkscape to process it in the way I want. Unfortunately the district borders are not shown as a solid line but a repetition of a small line, a dot, another small line and another dot and so on. Can somebody here give me some advice how to start this. Is using a free svg conversion tool a good first step and if so, which one would you use to overcome the problem with the district border lines? Or would you start by importing the jpg file into some free PC software program like Inkscape and let that program do the conversion of the pixels of say a river into lines that can be scaled? Any advice would be appreciated. - Robotje (talk) 10:58, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

@Adi0138: File:Nikola Tesla (online-audio-converter.com).ogg appears to have uploaded successfully (but needs categories). Did you have a problem with some other file? - Jmabel ! talk 02:11, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
Who is speaking? Whose recordings are the music? What is with the long staticky thing (e.g. around 08:00)? This seems like it may have copyright problems, and is also likely not in Commons:scope. It is certainly not all you: you are not an entire orchestra, and I presume you aren't both the man and woman talking in a Slavic language. - Jmabel ! talk 02:15, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

Conferma corretto caricamento foto

Buongiorno, sto partecipando al WLF ed ho diversi scatti da condividere. Prima di procedere vorrei sapere se i primi due che ho caricato sono stati caricati correttamente (info, metadati, licenze etc) e saranno idonei a partecipare al concorso. Questi i link https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elmetto_del_Gladiatore.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gli_Antichi_Romani.jpg Grazie mille Roberto Roberto_WLM (talk) 00:17, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

Better form of the links (so it works well on both PCs and phones): File:Elmetto del Gladiatore.jpg, File:Gli Antichi Romani.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 02:01, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

--rimshottalk 22:33, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

Category redirects

Do bots move all images from category redirects? I’ve just moved Category:Images from the official Dilma Rouseff Flickr stream, because Dilma’s name was misspelled. The category contains more than 8,000 files. Should I move them by myself or simply wait? RodRabelo7 (talk) 14:05, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @RodRabelo7: I strongly recommend using the delinker for this. Assuming you are not an admin, make a request at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. In the future, it's probably best just to make the request there rather than doing the move by other means (but it will do fine cleaning up at this point, too). Also deals with modifying subcats, which even VFC won't do. - Jmabel ! talk 17:25, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

How download photo of place? ԼեյլիԱբգարյան (talk) 15:23, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

John David Stewart

I am a retired lecturer from the University of Birmingham, England. John Stewart was the founder of the Institute of Local Government Studies, where I was employed. He was the leading academic in the UK who worked on matters relating to local government, and on that basis should have a Wikipedia entry. In the past, I have edited just one Wikipedia article, on Selly Oak Colleges, most recently in 2021. I have written an article about John Stewart, which meets your guidelines. I wrote it in WORD and have saved it in Rich Text Format. It does not include pictures or graphics. Can you advise me how to proceed? Do I have to convert it before loading? My username is Tr1g1av=== Can you confirm that I can use this username and the related password? Many thanks Tr1g1av=== (talk) 17:09, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

@Tr1g1av===:
  1. This is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. We don't host user-written articles here.
  2. I strongly recommend you read en:Help:Your first article. To edit Wikipedia, you have to write directly into the wiki. I guess you can copy-paste a good deal from your word document, but it's not otherwise relevant. Also, it has its own conventions (and templates) for citations, etc.
  3. I also strongly recommend you read en:WP:COI, about conflicts of interest. It sounds like you are at least sufficiently connected to your subject that you have a potential conflict to reveal in accord with the rules stated there.
  4. You say it "meets our [I presume you mean Wikipedia's] guidelines, but the above points make me wonder how familiar you are with those guidelines, so you may, in particular, also want to read en:Wikipedia:Verifiability, especially what are and are not considered reliable sources to cite. - Jmabel ! talk 17:23, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

File quality

When I download a file that needs editing I have to download the highest quality of the image otherwise I can't edit it. But the file in question has to have a specific dimension to fit the articles, and when I resize it the file size and quality decreases. Is there any way I can stop this? AtlasSweden (talk) 19:58, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

Commons:CropTool can do lossless cropping, if that's what you mean by resizing. If you crop to remove a border or other unimportant content, you can overwrite the existing image, otherwise please upload the cropped version as a new image. If you just need a smaller image, no cropping, then use the corresponding wiki code, see en:Help:Pictures. --rimshottalk 22:02, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
@AtlasSweden: And if that didn't answer your question, could you please be more specific about what you are trying to do (and to what file) rather than an abstract question. - Jmabel ! talk 04:49, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
Or are you talking about the thumbnail dimensions? The server doesn't send all the image to the browser, but a scaled down (resized) version. You can specify the dimensions you want in the article, without doing anything on Commons. If you want a different aspect ratio, then you might have to crop the image, but you should still use the full resolution image. Don't scale it down. –LPfi (talk) 20:55, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

Externally used image

Hi, I swear we have a template that goes on a files talkpage that says where it's used - if this does exist do we know what it's called?, I swear I've seen it on 1 or 2 file talkpages in the past, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 22:53, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

{{Published}} is what I was looking for I think, Normally I never have this much luck hence the question first, I'll leave it up for anyone in the future. –Davey2010Talk 22:55, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
User:Davey2010: User:Trade asked the same question a few days ago. If either of you has a name for this you think would be more mnemonic, and it doesn't already exist as a template name on Commons, feel free to create a template redirect from that name. - Jmabel ! talk 04:52, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Jmabel, Ah okay, I only found it by putting in "Externally used image" and then basically trimming it down until something popped up which "{{External use}}" did, I've created "{{Externally used image}}" and "{{Images used externally}}" as the first redirect will definitely help me if I never need to use this again but didn't know if the second may help others too,
Thank you for your help - had you not replied I would never have thought of creating the redirect so thank you for replying and for your help, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 12:19, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

Rights

Hello,

I tried a few months ago to put a photography of the French deputy Aurélien Saintoul on his wikipedia page, but after discussion, I was told that the photography was not free of rights.

So, I wrote him an email asking him to send me a photography and an email authorizing the publication and the lifting of image rights for use on Wikipedia. That's what he did (I blurred my name).1,2

So I was wondering how to add this in the permissions?

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aur%C3%A9lien_Saintoul.jpg AgisdeSparte (talk) 10:28, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

You will find the information at VRT. However: the permission you posted is an image in french, so i cannot easily run it through online MT. But a permission for "use in Wikipedia" does not suffice. A permission for use under a free license (for example cc-by-4.0) is needed. You may need to get another permission. C.Suthorn (talk) 14:23, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
@AgisdeSparte: And the permission needs to come from the owner of the copyright (typically the photographer), not the subject of the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 16:04, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

delete a file uploaded by self

how long does it take to delete a file uploaded by self after deletion request is raised? is there a faster and easier way for files uploaded by self? Shishtn (talk) 13:08, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @Shishtn: a difficult question to answer in the abstract. If you made the request within 7 days after uploading, and it isn't in use, and you marked it correctly as a speedy deletion request by uploader, it should typically be a day or two. If not, then it could take longer and may not even be deleted. I'm guessing you are asking about a specific file, could you please say what file? - Jmabel ! talk 16:08, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

Removing a wrongful "Upload a new version of this file" upload

Was trying to figure out how to properly attribute the source file for an upscaled and translated version of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DNA_microarray.png, and assuming that the proper way to do so would be through the "upload a new version of this file" option. I quickly found out this was not the case and could not find a way to undo my actions. Could somebody assist me with this? Kaarle Mäkelä (talk) 13:26, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

@Kaarle Mäkelä: I think you've successfully done so using the "revert" option, though because of cacheing you may not see that immediately. See the question "Why is the old picture and not the new uploaded picture on my screen?" at COM:FAQ#PURGE. --bjh21 (talk) 14:04, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
As for how to attribute for a different version under a new filename: have a look at File:'OUT OF GAS' SIGNS HAVE CROPPED UP ALL OVER THE PORTLAND AREA etc NARA - 548174 (Ke4roh restore).jpg which is a decent example of doing it well. - Jmabel ! talk 16:11, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

有關標識上傳之版權問題|Copyright Issues Regarding to Logo Uploads

我想要上傳一間學校的標識至維基百科中,但該圖片並非由我本人創作、擁有,我該如何注意版權問題?

I would like to upload a school's logo to Wikipedia, but that image isn't created or owned by me, how should I notice to copyright issues? Laithomas (talk) 07:36, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

  • @Laithomas: Each Wikipedia has its own rules on fair use; you don't say whether this is about uploading to the Chinese-language Wikipedia, the English-language Wikipedia, or some other. You'd have to ask on the relevant Wikipedia.
  • (The only allowed way to upload it here on Commons would be if the copyright-holder would offer a free license, which is unlikely in a case like this.) - Jmabel ! talk 16:03, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

PageViews API

BaGLAMa 2 is a tool based on the Wikimedia PageViews API. At https://glamtools.toolforge.org/baglama2/#gid=920&month=202212&giu=dewiki&server=de.wikipedia.org it states that the page de:Lützerath containing the file Greta Thunberg at LütziBleibt in 2023 30.jpg was shown 10504 times in 12-2022. However I took this foto at 14th January 2023 (when I was for the first time in Lützerath), uploaded it at 15th and it was added to the article at 17th of january. How can it been shown 10504 times a month before it even existed? Is there something wrong with the PageViews API? C.Suthorn (talk) 09:10, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

  • I'm guessing that it shows how many times the page was viewed, and knows that the page now contains the photo, but doesn't have the sophistication to know that the page didn't contain the photo at that time. - Jmabel ! talk 16:06, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
It does take notice if an image was removed. The numbers are computed once for every month as far as i can see. Who is the maintainer of the tool? C.Suthorn (talk) 16:17, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

You're at Wikimedia Commons, we don't have articles, only media. Wikipedia has articles, those aren't uploaded, however, but written directly, so that anyone can edit them. If you want to create an article at the English language Wikipedia, see Your first article. --rimshottalk 16:39, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

Is this a van?

Hi, So I'm sorting the Vans category out and have come across Category:Honda L700 - The EN article calls it a "commercial station wagon",
Do I create a "Honda vans" category for this or should this be classed as a normal car?, Most older UK estate cars tend to get used as vans and obviously they're not in van categories so I would assume the van category should be removed?,
Wanted a second opinion in case I've missed something, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 17:58, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

Station wagon or estate car, even a shooting brake. But under UK laws (and much of Europe) it's not a "van" because it has glazed rear panels (this might also involve rear sets, or the upholstery of rear seats, depending on jurisdiction). This has tax implications. At the time these were built, they'd have been expensive vans to import to the UK, because they'd be taxed more heavily as cars, not commercial vans.
I don't think there's any overlap with kei cars. Although they might qualify today, they wouldn't have done (despite the engine size) back then. Andy Dingley (talk) 18:56, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
@Andy Dingley, Oh I see, That makes sense, Okay I'll remove the van category, Thank you Andy for your help I greatly appreciate it, Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 19:27, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

It would be helpful if you linked to the putative image you supposedly uploaded. I don't see any in your contributions. It also helps to understand that the EXIF data may contain instructions to rotate the image apart from its natural rotation. So that extra rotation may be hidden from some viewers but come into play later on. It's worth checking to see whether something in your path of image generation inserted a 180° rotation.
