Uploading/transferring a video from archive.org to wikicommons[edit]

Hi, I tried a few times to upload the following historical (1925) video by Tullio Locchi (author who died in 1926 and therefore largely out of copyright) on the commons

https://archive.org/details/piombino-inaugura-lacqua-potabile-alla-presenza-di-s.-m.-il-re

via the direct archive org transfer mechanism of the video Everything would seem to fall within the requirements

but after a while the process fails. saying: Error
Our servers are currently under maintenance or experiencing a technical problem. Please try again in a few minutes.
See the error message at the bottom of this page for more information

and below, in a smaller font:

Request from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx via cp6013 cp6013, Varnish XID 966652750
Error: 503, Backend fetch failed at Sat, 13 May 2023 12:30:32 GMT

I've tried several times on different days, with different accounts and from different machines, but always with the same result and I'm out of ideas. Trying to compress the video below 100mb and uploading it directly doesn't seem sensible to me, you would lose the quality of the video which is extraordinarily good (the video has been recently restored).

Can you help me? Thanks in advance. ALoopingIcon (talk) 07:22, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The webm file at archive org is 693MB. Most Upload tools for commons will fail with files larger than 600MB or 1.2GB (The HTTP500 response you get is typical for that). You can however download the video and than upload with either Rillke's bigchunkedupload script or with the free version of Offroader. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 08:19, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for the kind suggestion! I can try to use the script for uploading, but I would like to have some pointers to a gentle introduction on how to use this script (I am not a great expert in using scripts in wikimedia). ALoopingIcon (talk) 20:06, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@ALoopingIcon: Hi. I was able to upload it for you as File:Piombino inaugurates drinking water in the presence of His Majesty the King.webm using User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js (doc at User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js and help at Help:Chunked upload).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:39, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm unable to play the video. I suppose the file transfer wasn't done, right? Polda18 D C 13:15, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Plays fine for me. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 19:30, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, it works now. I guess it wasn't fully transferred yet at the time. Polda18 D C 07:57, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Great! thanks!!! I will update, add info and category to the uploaded file (and bookmark the script for other large uploads) ALoopingIcon (talk) 07:04, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
What do you mean by "different accounts"? Sounds like puppetry to me. Polda18 D C 09:20, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Polda18: no rule against having multiple accounts here, as long as you don't use them in a misleading manner. - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for clarification. I come from Czech Wikipedia, where puppet accounts are usually banned. Polda18 D C 19:31, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No puppetry at all! This error was reported to me by an archivist that tried to upload the file and after seeing the weird error asked help to me personally. I have a computer science background so I seemed appropriate (in the end I was not :) ) . I saw the error on her machine and her account and then I tried myself with my account. ALoopingIcon (talk) 19:42, 15 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As far as I can see, you have not uploaded a video by now. So has your friend uploaded the video or are you working on it or do you still have a problem with it? C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 08:04, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can I upload a screenshot?[edit]

Hi, I'd like to upload this screenshot from here for a draft I'm working on at English Wikipedia. I'm not really familiar with policy, especially for screenshots, at Commons, so I was wondering if I am able to upload this here or at English Wikipedia. JML1148 (talk) 09:10, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

That screenshot is likely copyrighted, given it's on an Australian large news media page (which now seems unavailable, and it lacks a snapshot on Wayback Machine as it seems). You may be able to upload it on English Wikipedia under the Fair Use policy, but you should provide a detailed "Non-free Use Rationale" for this picture's intended usage. The rationale may or may not be accepted. If it is not accepted, then the image will be prompted for speedy deletion, until a valid rationale is provided and accepted within 7 days from speedy deletion mark. Thank you for the response! JML1148 (talk) 07:10, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright help regarding File:Angryblackgirlimdbposter.jpg[edit]

To Whom It May Concern;

I'm a relatively-new user of the main Wikipedia site, and I was trying to upload an image to use for a page draft, The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (which I'm still waiting to get published). I found the poster on the IMDb page for the film while looking for any extra updates. I don't know who created the poster, so that's what I put in the description page for the image.

I want it clear that I was not attempting to violate copyright restrictions in any way. I was asked to put this page together by the company producing the film, and when I found the poster online, I thought it would be right to add it to the draft. I have attached the link to the IMDb page in this letter as well -- if you have any questions or advice you can give me, I'd be open to hearing it.

Copyright belongs to whomever created it, and fair use is not allowed on Commons. Additionally, English Wikipedia requires that you disclose w:WP:COI when you are being paid to edit articles. (edit: I see that you've already disclosed that on Wikipedia, good) Abzeronow (talk) 19:42, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I was about to mention -- every time I make an edit on the draft, regardless of it being minor or major, I add that I'm a paid vendor.
I want to add that I migrated over here from the FANDOM Wiki sites, so I wasn't as familiar with Wikipedia's policies regarding images. I filled out what I could, but since I can't figure out who created the image, I would like some advice on how to delete it. I've been reading other help pages, but I haven't been able to discern what to do. (Spoiler: I'm dumb.) Doodleferp (talk) 20:01, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You need to ask your contact with the company who owns the right to the poster and then contact said person for permission Trade (talk) 20:12, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Doodleferp: more to the point on that last, the poster can only be added to Commons if they are willing to give a free license for it. If they are, then there are two ways they can convey that:
  1. On a site obviously under control of the copyright-holder, they can offer that license. For example, if the people who have made the film have obtained all rights to the poster and there is a web site for the film, the license for the poster could be indicated there. Then you (or anyone) can site that on the relevant file page.
  2. Someone who is authorized to represent the copyright-holder can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to confirm the license. Either they can reference an online copy of the poster or use an email attachment to be clear on what work they are granting a license.
Alternatively, this can be done entirely within the English-language Wikipedia, on a fair use basis. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free content and especially en:Template:Non-free film poster. - Jmabel ! talk 21:19, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
(Edit conflict) Doodleferp: If permission is not forthcoming from the copyright holder, the English wikipedia does allow strict and limited use of copyright images such as film posters or portraits of dead people, following review so long as their use complies with ALL 10 non-free content criteria. This is only allowed after the article has been moved into mainspace and not permitted in draft articles or user pages. Copyright is a complex topic the enwiki has a specific copyright questions page which is useful for media files being used there. Ww2censor (talk) 21:30, 16 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks a bunch, everyone! I'll do my best to make sure I know all the right rules and procedures from now on!
Like I said in the OG comment I'm still really new to all the Wikipedia red tape and I've super paranoid about accidentally stepping over a line. This really freaked me out and I'm glad so many people were willing to give me great advice! Sorry for the inconvenience and have a great day! Doodleferp (talk) 18:37, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright[edit]

Hello, I've just uploaded this file [1]. I think it's PD because the book it was taken from was published in Paris in 1935 [2], the author of the photo died in 1950 [3], and the French National Library released the book and photo with this "Open License" [4][5]. Am I right? Thank you for you help, Gitz6666 (talk) 01:21, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

By the way, I've just received this notification/warning [6]. So this licence is not accepted [7]? The author of the photo died more than 70 years ago and the image was first released in 1935. Gitz6666 (talk) 02:21, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Gitz6666: The warning message merely reminds you that you forgot to use a recognized template to indicate a license. The template for License ouverte is Licence Ouverte (or Licence Ouverte 2 for version 2). However, I think you may be mistaken in your estimation that the book would be under that license. For two reasons. Firstly, the page Conditions de réutilisations des données de la BnF only says that the BnF offers its descriptive notices (biographic notices, authority notices) under that license, not the books or other items in its collection. Secondly, even if the BNF offered a license on items, it can only offer a license on items on which it holds the copyright, and nothing indicates that it ever held a copyright on this book. You are correct to say that the works of Mathieu Pieters (1877-1950) are in the public domain in Europe per the 70 years rule. A template for that is PD-old. (For the internal policy of Commons, it's not so much the place of publication of the French version of the book that matters but the place of first publication of the photo, which was not necessarily first published in this version of the book but possibly in the Netherlands, but that doesn't affect the conclusion of public domain in Europe. However, the photo may not be in the public domain in the United States (see URAA artist/doc)). Please note that some of your other uploads are also missing a license/status template, even if there was no automated message about them. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:13, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Asclepias, yes, I understand. Thank you for the explanation. Gitz6666 (talk) 14:38, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unable to find license for wartime photos[edit]

I'm trying to find some photos of the corvette HMS Hollyhock to add to the page for it, since I've became quite invested in making the page as informing as possible. I've found quite a few photos of her, but most of them were taken when she was sailed during the second world war, and I am unable to tell if they would be suitable for upload. The two photos that I would like to upload can be found on a memorial website for the ship (hmshollyhock.com) but I can't find anything with respects to the license of the photos. My understanding is that the photos are old enough that they're available for use, but I decided it would be better to ask about it.

Thanks in advance!

Can I upload a poster of a recent movie?[edit]

Can I upload a poster of a recent movie? On the Wikipedia page of the film, in the Spanish language the poster has not yet been uploaded. The movie is "Five Nights at Freddy's", and the poster is this: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FwSfDsHaUAEeNKJ?format=jpg&name=large

Hugp4 (talk) 13:15, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You might want to wait more than 10 minutes next time ... You may only upload freely licensed content to Wikimedia Commons. This movie poster is obviously copyrighted and must not be uploaded here. --rimshottalk 14:40, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Replace recently uploaded image with new image[edit]

I recently uploaded an image, but didn't notice some unsightly border artifacts. I have the exact same image, but without the artifacts that I'd like to replace the original image with. I tried clicking the "Upload new image" button but I don't want to change any of the meta data including image title etc. I want the new image to be be picked up automatically in the article that uses it. But it won't let me upload the new image with the same name. How do I do this? Arkenstrone (talk) 00:05, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Once again tried adding the updated image but I get this error:
Upload warning
Copy uploads are not available from this domain.
How do I change the image? Arkenstrone (talk) 01:18, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Arkenstone: were you trying to do this as a cross-domain upload? That won't work for an overwrite. - Jmabel ! talk 04:05, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Which means that you have to go to the file description page on Commons (not the one on a Wikipedia, and not a Wikipedia article page) and use the upload link just below the upload history. –LPfi (talk) 12:26, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, I did go to the Commons page and not the Wikipedia article. It shows the image I uploaded, and gives me a link to click that says "Upload a new version of this file". So I click and enter the file to upload, the source URL, and the file change description and it gives me back the "Copy uploads are not available from this domain." Arkenstrone (talk) 19:13, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Arkenstrone: Your account was created too recently and has not yet acquired the right to overwrite existing files. It should be good at the beginning of next week. However, if that was the problem, the error message seems strangely worded. A few unrelated questions, if you don't mind: Why didn't you upload the full-sized images instead of half-sized images? Why did you indicate the date of the opening of an exhibition at the Munich museum as the date of creation of the photos? That doesn't seem the case. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:38, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Details I may have overlooked in the fields. Feel free to correct. Arkenstrone (talk) 22:57, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Date corrected. Arkenstrone (talk) 02:47, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see, so I'll wait. Though may I suggest having the devs allow those who upload images to the Commons be tagged/whitelisted so they may modify images they've uploaded even if they are new users? Probably very common for people to upload, and realize there is an artifact in the image, and want to re-upload. Arkenstrone (talk) 02:50, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay, so was able to upload a slightly cropped image and it displays on click-expand. However, the thumbnail used in the article hasn't changed - it's the old thumbnail! How do I get the thumbnail to re-generate? Arkenstrone (talk) 06:43, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ah finally got it to work. Follow these instruction to purge the cache. [11] Arkenstrone (talk) 07:11, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to upload a non-free photo even though it has already been uploaded in another language[edit]

Hi So I want to upload a non-free image to the ENglish wiki, its already been posted on the Arabic one but I don't know how to do it. I made one but put the source unknown as there was no option to do non-free. It is necessary as I plan to use it for the TV show. This is Commons. Non-free images are not allowed at Commons. English Wikipedia (is it english Wikipedia, or Wikinews, Wiktionary, or another english wiki?) has a fair use policy. You will find the english wikipeida fair use policy at the english wikipedia, but not at commons. If you need help to understand the english wikipedia fair use policy you should ask at the english wikipedia. The community at the english wikipedia may be able to help you with the english wikipedia fair use policy, but it is unlikely that the community at commons will be able to do that. Navbox at top of category for moving between magazine volumes[edit]

I've been unable to find an example or the code to put a navbox at the top of a category of a certain volume of a magazine to be able to move to the next volume of that magazine. I'm probably not using the right search terms, it's been kicking my **s so I've come here for help. This is one of the categories I'm talking about https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Thomas_Butler_Gunn_Diaries,_Volume_6 I want to be able to move to either volume 5 or volume 7 from this page without having to go back to the parent category. I've used the decades navbox from this page before (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Frank_Leslie%27s_Illustrated_Newspaper,_1864) but I don't know how to change it to work for volumes not decades. St. Andrews Drive (talk) 19:16, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There is no universal template but you can create something like Template:Century_Magazine_navbox. Ruslik (talk) 20:03, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you. I thought that might be the case. I'm still relatively new here and didn't want to spend time creating something already done. Uploading pronunciation audio files[edit]

Hi!

I have a zip file (938 megabytes), which includes 11 502 separate audio files of the pronunciation of Estonian words. The files are protected under CC BY 4.0, the author is Eesti Keele Instituut (Institute of Estonian Language) and they have been recorded between the years 2010 and 2013. Up until now, I have manually uploaded some of these files just as I go along, totalling now to about 70. However, I think it might be worth it to upload all of the pronunciation audio files to Commons. Surely there's a better way to do that than manually uploading 11k files? Also, the file names are "psv_00001.wav" ... "psv_11502.wav", but they should be renamed to "Et-<<word>>.ogg" when uploaded. Also vol.2, the 70 or so files uploaded now are in the .ogg format, although the originals are .wav. I've been converting them because I thought all audio files should be in .ogg. Is it also possible to convert all of these? This entire thing sounds like a lot of work and I, as a not really bot-competent person, am looking for ways to make this process as easy as possible. Thanks! Joonas07 (talk) 21:49, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Cover art for a 1926 novel that is in the public domain on Public Gutenberg Australia[edit]

This book by Edgar Wallace is in the public domain on Public Gutenberg Australia. Would this cover for that edition (not the film image used with the Project Gutenberg text) be considered in the public domain as well, or alternatively usable under fair use?

Release rights for SVG variants of pre-existing Commons files that were released in PD, but not CC0[edit]

I'm trying to upload an SVG version of File:The graph y = √x(s).png via the File Upload Wizard, but I can't figure out how to properly fill in the release rights section. I can't tell for certain if I should state it to not be my own work, and - if I do - how to complete the "Now tell us why you are sure you have the right to publish this work" section — "The copyright holder published this work with the right Creative commons license" > CC0 doesn't seem to make sense because the original wasn't released in specifically CC0, and I can't find a specific template for indicating it was adapted from something already on Commons. What do I do? Lemondoge (talk) 02:04, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As I can see the file was actually released in PD. Anyway for any practical purposes CC0=PD. Ruslik (talk) 14:16, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just do what you need to get through the Wizard, then go back and hand-edit to describe the specific situation correctly. Or skip the Wizard, use Special:Upload and get it right in the first place. - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Apollo 10 Lunar Module image from Featured Article is not the image the description claims. What should be done?[edit]

Three days ago the featured article on English Wikipedia was Apollo 10, and the image on the main page was File:Apollo_10_Lunar_Module.jpg, and the summary claims the image ID is AS10-34-5112. However, the original image uploaded on 30 June 2007 is AS10-34-5112, the current image uploaded on 10 May 2008 is AS10-34-5109. This image is used on a lot of pages. Should it be reverted to the proper AS10-34-5112 and a new image globally replace its use with a properly uploaded AS10-34-5109? Or should it remain the way it is and the description updated? - Caddyshack01 (talk) 14:35, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Caddyshack01: The original image should not have been overwritten with a different image. Fixes can be: 1) Revert File:Apollo_10_Lunar_Module.jpg to the original image, 2) If you judge the 2008 image useful, reupload it as a separate file with a correct description, 3) Decide which file you prefer to use in the Wikipedia article, or you could use the uncropped version of AS10-34-5112. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:38, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Nominate for deletion or not?[edit]

I found a bunch of pdf books with copyright dates that make them not in the public domain as far as I understand. It looks like the metdata from the source mistakenly took the publishing house established date (1834) as the copyright instead of the correct date from the versa pages. The dates seem to be in the 1950s-1970s. I nominated a few for deletion thinking that was the correct thing to do. My search brought up dozens of these mis-dated pdfs and I don't want to nominate dozens of files for deletion if it's not really a concern or something I shouldn't be concerning myself with. St. Andrews Drive (talk) 19:59, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@St. Andrews Drive: It sounds like the typical problem of misdating by the Internet Archive in mass uploads by Fae. Yes, deletion is the correct thing after you checked that no public domain reason can apply. You can probably nominate for speedy deletion when obvious copyvio. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:56, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Or you can make a single mass deletion request with a list of the files. - Jmabel ! talk 01:45, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Jp den tex[edit]

My name is JP Den Tex, I'm a Dutch singer/songwriter with English language songs. I've already made a sandbox draft proposal of a succinct english summary and would like to go public with it in the short term. I've also uploaded a recent picture by Dutch photographer Koos Breukel. How to proceed from here is unclear to me, I'm a bit in the dark righ now. Could someone please help me out? Jp den tex (talk) 14:22, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Jp den tex: I assume the "sandbox draft" is en:User talk:Jp den tex/sandbox. We can't really say or do much here on Commons about something on en-wiki, but do make sure you have read and conformed to COI|their policy on conflicts of interest or you are very likely to have your account blocked there.
  • As for File:Photo JP Den Tex (Wiki).jpg, who owns the copyright? By default it would be the photographer. If he has formally signed it over to you, we need you to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to provide the document that transfers the copyright to you. If not, we need him to go through the process outlined at [[COM:VRT] to grant the claimed license. Otherwise, this is going to end up being deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 18:04, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Personal sandbox in Wikimedia Commons[edit]

I'm learning how to use WMC but can't find the equivalent of the Personal Sandbox that I can set up in Wikipedia. Can you have a personal sandbox in WMC and if so how do I set one up? Thanks, Whistian Whistian (talk) 16:22, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, you can create subpages in your userspace. Creating your main user page User:Whistian is optional, but it might be a good start. A user subpage begins with the name of the main user page, followed by a slash, followed by the specific name you want to give to your subpage. It would look like, for example, User:Whistian/Sandbox, where you can replace Sandbox with whatever you want. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:21, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Many thanks. Where can I find 'Help' with how to use my Sandbox? I tried to upload a photo to it, but found the photo - 'Frieze 191001.jpg' - has gone into Wikimedia Commons, not into my personal sandbox. How can I delete this? I wan to experiment with uploading photos, creating categories and galleries etc, in my sandbox, and then delete them all again. How can I do this? Thanks again for your help. Whistian Whistian (talk) 08:42, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You cannot. The concept of a sandbox makes sense in Wikipedia. There you can start writing an article and it will not be indexed by search engines and other users can see, that it is not an article in Wikipedia, but only some scribbling in your sandbox, that may or may not become part of Wikipedia. Commons however (while useing the MediaWiki Software) is a media database. Each and every media file that is uploaded to Commons is public at once and gets indexed by search engines. It has to be in scope and has to be freely licensed - otherwise it will be deleted. When you upload a file you give it to the public and you are not entitled to withdraw it. (There is however the possibility of a courtesy deletion. Within seven days you can ask for a deletion and if the file is not used, this will be granted as a courtesy). C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 11:23, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Add: There is no way to "upload a file to an article". Every uploaded file can be used for every article or cause (which includes using it in your article). C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 11:30, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for quick your reply. Is there another way to learn how to use WMC to set up categories, galleries, mix audio, video and text files with picture files, etc without all my 'scribblings' becoming public? Whistian Whistian (talk) 15:26, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Use visual editor with commons:sandbox[edit]

I want to experiment with WMC using the Sandbox for uploading files etc, but the only editor available is the text editor: visual editor is grayed-out. How can I use the visual editor with Commons:Sandbox. Thanks, Whistian Whistian (talk) 09:36, 25 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

VisualEditor is still a text editor, only with the difference that what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG editor). Meaning all of the formatting and visuals on the page are represented "as is", unlike the wikitext editor, which represents formatting and visuals on the page in the form of an editable wikitext syntax. There is no sandbox for uploading files to the wiki. Files once uploaded become public, and experiments are usually marked for speedy deletion as they're often out of scope. If you want to test out uploading a file to a wiki, you can create one on your localhost machine, if you download the MediaWiki software, or you can create a wiki on one of the wiki farms that are running MediaWiki software (like Miraheze or Fandom). I strongly suggest you to create a localhost wiki on your machine for testing purposes. Polda18 D C 11:46, 25 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

how do I overwrite a file?[edit]

I want to replace File:Tierced per chevron reversed demo.png, which I uploaded recently, with a copy that has the "shine" the other files in that set have long had and fixes the placement of the chevron, moving it up slightly, but I'm not seeing any button on that page to "overwrite" or "edit" the file itself (the "edit" links are all just for editing the wikitext, and "upload file" goes to the general upload form). -sche (talk) 09:06, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Source info when overwriting file that is my own work?[edit]

I'm trying to upload a new version of an existing file in the Commons that is my "own work" and is labelled as such in the Summary for it. The "Describing your uploads" section at the top of the upload page includes the following: "Source: The URL where you found the file, or write 'own work' if it is your own creation." But, when I write "own work" in the "Source URL" field of the "Source file" section and try to upload the file, the Commons refuses it with the warning "Invalid URL: own work." What am I missing here? Johnlumea (talk) 16:34, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Do you try to upload a file, or are you using the "upload a new file version" link from an existing file? Reuploading ignores source/info fields, it should not be possible to fail because of that. Which upload tool do you use? C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 19:36, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm using the "Upload a new version of this file" link on this page. Johnlumea (talk) 22:28, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok. There are radio buttons. You either upload from your local file - or from a file on the web. "source" on this form does not mean the same as "source" in the file description. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 22:58, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks. It's not clear that the radio buttons are presenting an either/or choice. Leaving the "Source URL" field blank enabled me to upload the file. Johnlumea (talk) 16:36, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Johnlumea: Hi, and welcome. In computerized user interfaces, round radio buttons are exclusive - you may only use one, like the buttons on analog car radios for tuning to one radio station. Square checkboxes are different, you may use more than one, like checkboxes for a to-do list or grocery list on paper. Sometimes, the radio buttons are not round or the checkboxes are not square.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:53, 27 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@ Vad Anita: who took the photo? If it was not a "selfie": did they formally sign copyright over to you? Has it been published elsewhere? @Vad Anita: The file File:Anita Vad.jpg is not deleted yet. For now, it only has a problem tag, added by an administrator of Hungarian Wikipedia, User:Regasterios, asking for evidence of some sort of pemission. So, what do you mean by "it was my own personal photo"? Do you mean that you took this photo yourself as a self-portrait? If not, the copyright owner will have to confirm the free license (see Commons:VRT). Also, it may seem a little strange that the photo is taken in front of a poster for a 2022 event if it was taken on 22 May 2023 . -- Asclepias (talk) 14:30, 24 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File uploader (for a group of files)[edit]

I used to use Vicuna Uploader to upload a group of files. I have a new Windows 11 computer. I downloaded its Zip file and extracted the files. When I click on vivuna.bat, Windows doesn't want to run it. If I tell it to run it anyway, it shows a window for a fraction of a second and then it disappears.

I decided to try PrettyPat. I downloaded its jar file, but I can't get it to do anything.

Can someone help me get a program to upload a group of files to Commons on my computer? Bubba73 (talk) 05:11, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

A jar-File is a Java-Application and will only run if a Java-JRE is installed on the Computer. You can download and install the JRE from Oracle or from OpenJDK. Vicuna is also a Java application. The UploadWizard can upload up to 150 or 500 files in a single batch. At Windows 11 you can have a virtual Android device in Windows and use the Offroader-App in the virtual Android. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 05:30, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, I must need to download the Jave-JRE. I've only used the UploadWizard to upload individual files. In Vicuna, I could put ina name, the description, and categories on the first one and apply that to the rest of the group. Can UploadWizard do that? Bubba73 (talk) 05:49, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes UploadWizard has checkboxes and a button to copy the text parts from the first file that you select to all other files and auto-increments the file number (maximum 3 digit numbers). C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 20:24, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

can I upload a newspaper article's image which I need as a reference in my wikipedia post's reference[edit]

I need a link for the newspaper article published in the year 2015, as I couldn't find that in the archives or online e-paper, I need to upload the image or pdf of the article somewhere to generate a link for the same to use it in the wikipedia's post reference. Can I do that by uploading it in wikimedia commons? if I cite the paper, date, headline properly to avoid any copyright issue? Siwaniagrawal340 (talk) 06:32, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Short answer: no. Citing the paper, date and headline properly isn't enough to avoid copyright issue. Commons doesn't allow Fair Use material like English Wikipedia does. The image is most likely copyright protected and you can only link to the article. Anyone can follow references and check them themselves, which includes displaying additional images right in the source. Uploading that image to Commons would be copyright infringement. If you absolutely need to use the image in the Wikipedia article, then you may have to upload it to Wikipedia directly, under a Non-free rationale policy. Not all images would be accepted however. Especially photographs may be subject of rejection, because photographs are usually something people can take themselves. Especially illustration imagery (photographs added for illustration purposes, not depicting the real thing). You may also ask on English Wikipedia's help desk for further informations. Polda18 D C 09:18, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not all Wikipedias allow fair use, and e.g. Wikipedia in English require the image to be used in the article, which I assume isn't welcome in this case. You might want to add a relevant word-by-word quote (if there are specific sentences that contain the facts you cite) to the reference template, which together with the other information should be enough for cursory checks. You might want to keep a copy of the paper (or a scan) to be able to give more details if requested at some point; sadly, old papers are often awkward to lay hands on (they are kept in some archives and libraries, but you may need to travel to access them). –LPfi (talk) 09:53, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I wouldn't call a 2015 newspaper "old", and electronic version certainly exists somewhere (even if it is behind a paywall). But yeah, not all Wikipedias allow Fair Use. I was specifically talking about English Wikipedia (though there are multiple Wikipedias that do allow Fair Use as well). I actually come from Wikipedia that doesn't allow Fair Use, Czech Wikipedia, so I know there are those wikis. I must say that I'm fairly jealous of English Wikipedia, as they can to some extent use copyright protected material under non-free media use rationale, of course justified with reasons why a free medium cannot exist. A lot of those images are music cover arts, logos and typography that is unique enough to be protected by copyright. We can't have those, even if we wished. Polda18 D C 12:44, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The problem is that common libraries (at least here) get rid of newspapers after a year or so. The newspapers themselves have archives, and you can get the paper or a scan from legal deposit libraries, but that is awkward if you don't live close – and for big languages you need to be lucky to do. If there are online copies, then fine, but the OP didn't find any. –LPfi (talk) 17:31, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just to clarify on another aspect, though: you can cite paper references. The standard template on en-wiki for citing a newspaper is en:Template:Cite news. If there is no URL to cite, that's fine, just fill out the other fields. - Jmabel ! talk 14:54, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright on images planned to add onto an article[edit]

Hello, I am planning to add a company logo image onto an article. I can't find any images of this specific logo on Wikimedia Commons so I found the logo I was looking for on the company's website. How can I check this logo is suitable for addition onto articles without infringing on any copyright laws?

Thank you RossDG8 (talk) 20:56, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

RossDG8: Depending on the actual design and country of origin, the logo might not even be copyrightable. Otherwise one must obtain the image from the company under a free licence we accept, however, if that is not forthcoming, on the enwiki one may be able to add a copyrightable logo under their strict non-free media criteria for such images. Please provide the website of the logo so we can advise you further. Ww2censor (talk) 21:45, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
https://european.aero/ RossDG8 (talk) 22:17, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Which means you could upload it here and then use it in the article. What is our practice on attributing the author of logos? I assume logos are mostly {{Anonymous}}, but not always, so that template should not be used without checking. {{Own}} is obviously wrong. Often the company is put there, but a company cannot be an author. Leaving the field blank causes a warning on the file description page. –LPfi (talk) 06:50, 27 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

In fact, the general outline is unclear of what goes where, how subpages are made, etc. At this point all I want to do is withdraw the nomination. Do I just delete the edit ot the Article page? (I did made one nomination several years ago. It was very easy. The discussion was quite civilized and the article was deleted. This time it seems there are numberous other hoops to jump through. I guess this is the result of the increasing bureaucratization of Wikipedia.) AnthroMimus (talk) 02:18, 27 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@AnthroMimus: Hi, and welcome. Your AfD had two problems. On the article itself, you sent it to AfD while there was an active PROD in this edit; Sammi Brie corrected that in this other edit. The second problem is that you misspelled "Mamiya" as "Mayima" and used "{{subst:AFD|subpage}}" in this third edit creating the misspelled subpage en:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ron Mayima (you should have used "{{subst:afd2|pg=Ron Mamiya|cat=|text=}} ~~~~" with the text filled in); I compensated for that in these edits.
