Keep. The plate was first published in 1986, and the original deletion was made in error because this plate was published without a copyright notice and without subsequent registration within 5 years; per COM:HIRTLE, this is in the public domain due to failure to adhere to copyright formalities. I've opened up an undeletion request at this location related to the plate that was deleted, as the deletion appears to have been in error. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 02:27, 23 May 2023 (UTC)- Delete I was contacted off-wiki with information about this copyright registration for that statue of liberty depiction. The work was apparently created and published in 1984 and registered in 1985 (a bit odd for a plate first issued in 1986), but the registration appears to be enough to generate significant doubt about the freedom of the plate that incorporates that logo. As a note, we should also include File:NY liberty 2.JPG and the low-resolution File:Ny tow truck plate.png, both of which also include the copyrighted depiction of lady liberty. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 04:15, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- Keep License plates by nature are public domain and even it was other the DMV could care less if it was posted here. Shim119 (talk) 20:11, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

- License plates are in no way public domain by nature, but they could be public domain depending upon the copyright laws of the jurisdiction where they're issued. Furthermore, some license plate designs might not be entirely 100% the work of "government" employees, and might incoporate works of private individuals who could still be considered to be copyright holders depending upon relevant copyright laws and the nature of their agreement with the DMV or whichever body issues the plates. As for even it was other the DMV could care less if it was posted here is exactly the kind of rationale that is covered by COM:PCP. The DMV might not care, but such an argument has no merit when it comes to Commons unless the DMV comes out and clearly states as much and clearly claims they either are (1) making the plates available under an acceptable free license or (2) the plates are public domain under the copyright laws they operate under. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:58, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
- Delete per copyright registration record. Ankry (talk) 20:56, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- Delete - there is in fact a registration for copyright for this specific plate design, and as such the license plate is copyrighted. -- Whpq (talk) 21:15, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
