He had a stuffed monkey on the credenza behind his desk. When someone came into his office with a problem and had not thought about potential solutions, he would take the monkey off its shelf and gently pet it. He would then say to the individual, “See this monkey. Its my monkey. I don’t need your monkeys. Don’t try to put your monkeys on my shoulders.” People usually got the message.
