A simple question I used to pose to my team – “how much does it cost you to say ‘Thank you’ to some one?” It doesn’t have to be in a big team meeting, simply in passing, or walking round to their desk. A phone call may even be the only way to acheive it, but how will it make that person feel?

They can though, if not set up correctly, lead to unwanted consequences where people achieve the rewards but not the business goals. Need to ensure that the are correctly defined and are aligned with the business objectives.
