How tired you are from not taking a break does not show you to be a Success. Business burn out is a real thing and you must be prepared to look after your self or you’re in for a rocky ride! So whether you’re working from a virtual headquarters or just feeling the overwhelming responsibility here are some suggestions on what self-care might look like for a self-employed person.

Golf/ Sport

There is a reason why a lot of business meetings take place on a golf course, and it’s a delightful pastime for many people. Basically, a physical activity whether you’re turning into a business meeting or not, encourages endorphins, better sleep, and improve your fitness levels as well. Not only that, but you can concentrate a lot better when you’ve had some space to think. The squash courts, or tennis courts are usually full of self employed business people, just looking for a break and a bit of time out. Essentially self-care is all about taking some time to do something enjoyable for you. If that sport, or anything else, it’s entirely your decision but getting some fitness improvements along the way, can really make a difference to the overall Well-being. If you’re clever, you may be able to turn this hobby into business opportunities as well, since golf resorts, and leisure activity spaces, are usually full of networking opportunities. So you can’t go wrong

Socialising

Going to the pub for a drink or two on a Friday after work, it’s quite a popular pastime for many workers and self-employed people. We are social creatures, and spending time with our colleagues and friends after work, really helps lighten the mood, and improve relationships with our co-workers. This can extend to team building activities, and also Parties, either for Christmas, or birthdays, or to celebrate an achievement within the business. When people are able to let their hair down, they will always become a little more relaxed, so joining in the after-work drinks now and again, will really help you bond with co-workers and staff.

Time with family

A lot of us live for the weekend, not because we dislike what we do during the week for work (although that might be the case if you haven’t taken the plunge to become self-employed yet,), but it’s because we get to spend more time with our love ones. The people we tend to live with and necessarily the people we spend the most time with. We spend more time with our co-workers and colleagues than we do with family sometimes. So really taking the time and energy to socialise with your family and the people you live with, will really help improve your mood and relax you ready for the week ahead. There are many different activities to choose from so ask everybody else what they would like to do, and choose a great activity for you all to do at the weekends, or free weekday evenings.

Why not set up regular games nights for the family and get the kids involved too (they love the responsibility)!

Spa Day

Some fancy hotels, and gyms have incredible spas, that include steam rooms and saunas, swimming pools and massage treatments, and also beauty treatments. To choose to take some time for yourself, and also treat yourself to some beauty treatments, and maybe even a massage, will really help you feel as though you have taken a break. It doesn’t have to be a really long time out of your working day, but it is recommended that you take time out of work occasionally to stay focused. Even if you just take an afternoon once a month to look after yourself and forget about your worries, you feel the benefits.

Treatments

Why do you like to have reflexology, your hair done, nails, or even a massage your find this quality time, and money that you spend on yourself, to be an incredible investment. Your mood will be instantly improved after having treatments just for you. But it’s important to keep this up as the benefits only work if you are committed. It sounds a bit indulgent, and it doesn’t have to be a full treatment to be effective, but just taking a little bit of time for yourself, and adding the odd treatment into that time will make you feel 100 times better.

Hobbies

There may be a hobby that you had before you became self-employed, that has been shelved for now. However you really should have a little space to do something for yourself. Something that you are interested in, and can entirely focus on and become mindful about. If you don’t recall a specific hobby, then why not try some of the suggestions. Painting, painting can really make a chaotic Brain lovely and calm after only a few moments time. The beauty of being creative is that your brain is fully occupied, and doesn’t get time to think about the accounts and monotonous admin tasks that you have to be getting on with. This isn’t to say that you need to give up all of your commitments and pick up a hobby. But squeeze a little spare time out for yourself just to make sure you are being mindful and enjoying your spare time.

Ultimately by being self-employed, you have taken on a lot of responsibility on, if you are supporting your family with your income, that’s a considerable risk. And you really would like to make sure that that success happens for you and the family as well so to avoid burning out make sure you are spending time on looking after yourself as well. You can’t pour from an empty cup. And don’t forget to ask for help if you aren’t sure what to do what you’re up to your limits!
