Phil, by definition Leadership implies that we show the way, we need to be able to communicate how the goal will be achieved.
Random, crazy, unachievable goals are not what i am talking about.
AS i mentioned in a previous post, we were delivering small projects at a rate of 35% on-time and i set a target of 80%, which was a big, bold goal compared to where we were. But i had a believable plan as to how we could achieve it. Not only did we achieve it but we beat it, and this year we are delivering at rate of 95% on-time. This is a level which most people would have said was impossible.
Sometime we need to set big, bold goals because we need to make a major change to the way we do things, and sometimes this cannot be achieved if we try to do it incrementally. If i want to lose 15kg, then just cutting out bread won’t do it, i need to completely rethink my diet, my exercise regime, think outside the box to come up with a plan. This is why we need to set big goals.

Really.. smart goals perhaps and a goal that is in the minds eye of the minds team achievable.. But this assumes they haven’t set them which is another conversation about inspired leadership and management. I often wonder and question the whole issue of big juicy goals ..unless a serious connection is made at many levels above logical goals in organisation can be seen as corporate bullying misdirected over ambitious and unworkable.. My old boss one sauntered into my office and boldly declared a massive goal to grow from £18m to grow£80m in five yrs we were already working our nuts off.. Last one out turn the light off.. Engaged do-able heart and mindfully engaged goals yes.. The rest ya can keep..
