Welcome!

Hello, BD2412, and welcome to Wikimedia Commons. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

  • First steps
  • Babel guide - Commons is truly international, here's how to handle some multilingual issues
  • Commons FAQ - has some answers to common Commons questions
  • The Community Portal - has plenty more helpful links
  • A Gallery of your images - please correct any that are untagged or orphans (put them in a category)

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Commoner! If you haven't already done so, you might also want to open an account on a Wikipedia in your preferred language, or one of the other Wikimedia projects. By the way, please be sure to sign your name on Talk and vote pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, or three tildes (~~~) for just your name. If you have any questions, drop a note on the village pump, the Help desk, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! BD2412 T 02:02, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you. Siebrand 05:55, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello BD2412!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. Xeltran (talk) 13:00, 2 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Files you uploaded may be deleted[edit]

The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged {{OTRS pending}} for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have already sent the permission, please re-send it to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. At the same time, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Please note that this message is being left by an automated bot, whose operator is not an OTRS volunteer, therefore please do not send this information to me, as it will not save your images from deletion. Thanks for your time! Please help translate this message! HersfoldOTRSBot(talk/opt out) 00:51, 21 March 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Buddha Bar[edit]

Re this edit: do you have any basis to believe the (now-closed) Buddha Bar in Seattle was related to the French company? Or was this just a guess? I live in Seattle and to the best of my knowledge it was not. - Jmabel ! talk 05:45, 5 January 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • The French company owns U.S. trademark registration #2439577 for "Buddha Bar". If the Seattle location was not affiliated, it would be infringing that trademark. Of course, that may be why it is closed. Other than that, I have no knowledge of any connection. Cheers! BD2412 T 23:08, 6 January 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Huh. Yes, I was thinking just that: it might have been an infringing use. They never presented themselves as part of a chain, and as you can see from the image, they seem to have used a different logo. - Jmabel ! talk 04:10, 7 January 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:3cPlanchas.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Commons File mover.svg

Hi BD2412, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Thanks for uploading File:Barelylegal.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Barelylegal.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Bots[edit]

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Not sure why you moved this file, since Om or Aum is the conventional name of the symbol, while the new name is essentially puffery. Can you move the file back to its old name (Om.svg)? @Dharmadhyaksha: who is familiar both with the subject and common's rules, and may have alternate suggestions. Hi, regarding your question on the bottom of this page: I think that it's a copy of the original photo (a reproduction) where the rest of the original has been masked away. This, the fact that the front side of the building has been altered considerably since taking the picture (the fencing is gone, the door that's barely visible behind the fencing has been turned into a window) and also the misleading labeling on the postcard (asserting that the building stood on "Esterházy square", which it didn't, it was on a nearby street instead) made it particularly hard to track down the building (I almost thought that it's been destroyed in the wars or demolished by the Communists, because that's what happened to almost every building on what was Esterházy square back then; I finally identified it mostly with the help of the chimney in the front :). -- CoolKoon (talk) 19:07, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Irony[edit]

Do you see the Irony in a comment like (BD2412 moved page File:PAR.jpg to File:A region in the pseudoautosomal region of the short arms of the X- and Y-chromosome.jpg: Replace meaningless TLA with description of image.)? You replace an abreviation you don't understand (to me PAR is perfectly clear and meaningful), but then you explain it while using an abbreviation (TLA) that you don't explain and will be meaningless to many others, including me. Apart from that, what I don't see is how it helps to rename the file, if the relevant information is already included in the file description and thus will be found in a search anyway. So why is it worth spending time on this? Best, Dietzel65 (talk) 11:38, 26 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • "TLA" means three-letter acronym, these being inherently ambiguous. For example, "PAR" may be "perfectly clear and meaningful" to you, but it is also perfectly clear and meaningful to any air traveler who frequents the Paris airport, but with a different meaning, and perfectly clear and meaningful to any international aid organization working in Paraguay, but with a different meaning, and perfectly clear and meaningful to any golfer, but with a different meaning, and perfectly clear and meaningful to any stage lighting expert, but with a different meaning, and perfectly clear and meaningful to any resident of the cities of Par in England or Par in Iran or Par in Tibet, but with a different meaning. BD2412 T 15:14, 26 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for explaining TLA. Of course I see that abbreviations may be ambiguous. But I still don't get why it is useful to spend time on renaming the images. Anyone who would search for pseudoautosomal region or Paris airport or the other ones would find the respective images and categories anyway through the search. Best, Dietzel65 (talk) 13:25, 28 February 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

May I suggest BD2412 to read COM:RENAME and avoid file moves that are not clearly covered by that policy (do avoid fixing "punctuation errors"). Thanks. Materialscientist (talk) 04:38, 16 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I am currently engaged in a project on Wikipedia to fix small but unsightly punctuation errors - mostly spacing issues around commas. There are literally tens of thousands of these to fix, and the most efficient way to do this is to load large groups of articles through AWB and fix any pages in those groups that return such errors. Unfortunately, due to the structure of our coding, text in file names is not distinguished from text in the body of an article. Some templates omit the "File:" term, making it even harder to distinguish these while editing. In order to avoid thousands of false positives, the easiest thing to do is to just rename files that have the sort of punctuation errors that need to be fixed when found in an article. Otherwise, editors carrying out the same task in the future will continually come across the same apparent errors, and will waste thousands of edit's worth of time checking and dismissing them. I also note that filenames containing basic punctuation errors also tend to contain spelling errors or have other problems. In a number of cases, I have seen groups of images with very similar names except for a punctuation error - missing spaces and extraneous spaces distinguishing the image names. This is a recipe for confusion. I would prefer not to allow the idea of minimizing file moves (which do no harm to the system) interfere with the real work of fixing minor errors which continue to make Wikipedia look amateurish. BD2412 T 04:50, 16 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Commons is a very different project from en.wiki, please do comply with its file moving policy (yes, minimizing file moves). There are many reasons for that, one that you might not know is every move may result in a loss of file due to the imperfections of Wikisoftware. Judge paintings[edit]

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Jaime Pieras Jr.jpg et al.

Although why a DR was closed so precipitously is a question for the closing admin, not me.

The problem is, they're not in the public domain. These are paintings, with the copyright held by the artist.

https://www.prd.uscourts.gov/?q=judges-united-states-district-court&q=judges-united-states-district-court
http://davidwellsroth.com/artwork/copyright-notice/

See also 2015, when much the same thing happened. Note the comment from the artist too.

Commons:Deletion requests/File:William Henry Holt.jpg

One might question why the body commissioning these paintings didn't agree a broader licence with the artist, but the clear fact is that they didn't, and that much is beyond our control. Andy Dingley (talk) 09:20, 22 July 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This is an odd situation, then. The individual pages for the judges contain no copyright notice for the images, while the default for images is that they are in the public domain, and exceptions should therefore be accompanied by a notice wherever they are displayed by the government. Category discussion warning

Sculptures by artist has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:CalgaryDollarsCurrency.jpg.

Important message for file movers[edit]

Commons File mover.svg

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Natasha Vita-More in 2018.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

cat chat[edit]

Hi! I am going to tell you the reason that I am not fond of a category you made and perhaps you can tell me of things that I did not think of to make me feel better about it.

Some background, I watched the scientific illustrations of plants and birds (some of them "Type Species" which have some significance to the science histories of the plant or animal) be subcatted into artwork and even farther "down" from where they started which was "illustrations". Those artworks were the photographs before cameras. I also am biased against "Works by" cats, for very similar reasons. I think it is nice looking and self documenting to end the work version with a blank and then the year like [[Category:A Book Title| 1897]] which lines them up in chronological order above the other cats like Statues of and Towns named after and the other stuff caused by the works.

All of that is the opinion of mine, a bean-counter who likes to collect and label things, though.

My problem with Revision of File%3ARalph_Barton_1925_Gentlemen_Prefer_Blondes_Illustration_Paris.jpg is that it assumes that only one person ever illustrated that book and that only one version of that book will be here. I really don't like to separate the illustrations from the pdf or djvu that they came from, as we get stuff from flickr and gutenberg and others also. The version of the book can be subcatted at the illustrator. And, it messes up the wikidata book tree also.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 18:07, 7 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

To be clear, only one person ever illustrated that book, and that is the only version of the book in the public domain. BD2412 T 18:30, 7 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No argument from me on that point. Probably one version here will be enough also. But (I am pasting this because it is a great example of complicated catting, and I am proud of it.) Category:Tales from Shakespeare two authors, many illustrators, short stories for chapters, published first in a series in a journal/magazine, and then several books. Heavily but not over-catted.
You were working on the science fiction at source. First english publications of Jules Verne works there....--RaboKarbakian (talk) 19:43, 7 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have renamed the illustrations category to specify the 1925 work. BD2412 T 19:50, 7 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That is better, but it still diverges from the wikidata scheme. Is there a need (at commons, the image server) to separate illustrations (images)?--RaboKarbakian (talk) 15:35, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
is there a need? I don't know that I'd go that far, but there are 31 images for this work, and it is useful for Wikisource (which is hosting the proofread work) to have them all in a single category for comparison. BD2412 T 17:53, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will quit bothering you. I look forward to working with you on other projects. I would like to leave with this one opinion though, File:"Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" - Anita Loos (page 102 crop).jpg makes the case for pdf to jpeg being just awful! Bleh! Art appreciation has its limits....--RaboKarbakian (talk) 13:32, 9 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @MiguelAlanCS: This file was originally uploaded to Wikipedia by User:IndyRacer2 under the claim that he was the author of the image and was releasing it under a cc-by-3.0 license. Unfortunately, there is no further information from which to determine whether the uploader's claim is valid. That being said, they uploaded no other images, so their conduct is not consistent with any pattern of falsification of images. BD2412 T 16:21, 12 July 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Feedback on bias removing tool for Wikipedia much appreciated[edit]

Hi BD2412. We are a startup from Vienna which aims to increase neutrality in educational media and news. We are currently developing our editing tool "Unbias". It is aimed at authors and readers who wish to become more aware of biases in language. Please, have a look at our infographic to get a quick overview of how it works.

Link to PDF -> https://www.docdroid.net/EsJdsgX/unbias-info-pdf

We would appreciate your feedback as a very experienced Wikipedian, to find out if our bias-editor has the potential to be useful for you or editors in general.

Questions:

1. Do you think that a tool for detecting bias in sentences would help Wikipedians improve the overall quality of the platform?

2. Would you be interested in using our prototype to see if it has the potential to make a meaningful difference?

3. Is there someone you know who could be interested in testing our tool or who would like to share their opinion on this topic to help us?

We are looking forward to your response. Thanks.
