Congressional Research Service reports[edit]
If you wanted to make these more useful, adding in more metadata , such as report titles (vs just the numbers) and authors would be something to consider.
There's also the issue of 'front sheets' on a number of the uploads, which mention a contentious website, even if the actual reports are public domain as works of US Government, you might want to remove the front-sheets once relevant metadata has been incoporated into the media description pages. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:13, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: Thanks. I became aware of this because I've put a lot of effort into the 116th United States Congress and related media, etc. I can try to go back and do some mass renames, etc. 100% agree that those Wikileaks vanity pages need to be removed. I would love to add structured data but it is so cumbersome to do in the browser that it is very off-putting. Is there an easy way to do this? It seems like it has to be semi-automated via a bot to do it with any speed. :/ —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 07:43, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- Maybe AWB? I have used Visual File change to add, cange things on Media description pages. Would agree that some kind of semi-automated tool would speed things up. In respect of front-sheet removal, I wasn't aware of a tool that could do this en-masse at present, but is maybe something that could be implemented to be done en-masse server side. (IA-Upload had the option to remove front-sheets , but that only works for Djvu files ( or those generated directly from Jpeg scan collections IIRC). You might want to ask on the technical VP, or respond to my post there, concerning the CRS report uploads. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:24, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- I also in the Suggestions list for IA mirroring, put a collection of Congressional Hearing transcripts that I'd found. Those almost certainly also have an official source for recent ones, So you might want to respond to the suggestion in a particular way..ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:24, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: I wish I could use AWB on this structured data but it's nowhere on the page! I have no clue where those data are actually stored and in spite of asking, I've gotten no answers. Honestly, the structured data approach here is a miserable failure. I'm extremely disappointed in how it's been approached all around and I love semantics. It's a travesty. I don't think there are easy ways to fix the data or front page issues, at least without a semi-smart bot (e.g. if page 1 has the word "Wikileaks", delete it and reupload--that's something that someone can program but I am just not smart enough to do it myself). —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 08:28, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- The data for the Media description page is in a Book template, as I understand it. I'm not sure how the actual file is stored. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:41, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: We may be talking past one another. Go to (e.g.) my newest upload: File:Pb Neurotoxicity - Neuropsychological Effects of Lead Toxicity.pdf. You'll see that I added a caption in English. But if you were to press Alt+Shift+E to edit that page, you can look at the list of templates transcluded on it and Book is not one of them. Additionally, you will not see any place where the caption that I just mentioned appears. The only way to interface with that caption is with the clunky and user-hostile panel that appears below the file itself and above the summary. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 08:46, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

- Seems I was talking about "File information" as opposed to Structured Data, and I would agree that in time the Book template approach should also be migrated to structured Data, so that Biblographic metadata can be used more easily :) However that would be really long term.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:00, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- I think the Structured Data is stored somewhere in Wikidata IIRC. Not sure though. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:01, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: Gotcha. Yes, that metadata in the standard templates is handy as well but this also seems like something a bot can do as it uploads from Congress.gov. It's worth putting in the time to make a good bot to keep from the overhead of several humans putting forth a ton of effort to manually change all of these tens of thousands of uploads. I also think the data are in Wikidata somewhere but God only knows where or how to access it or how to edit it simply without all of the scripts loading and having to use the mouse alongside the keyboard, etc. Huge pain to edit that stuff. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 09:04, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

Uploading direct[edit]
It's possible to get a bulk download from the LOC site of results as CSV from a query (for example there is a button on https://crsreports.congress.gov/search/#/?termsToSearch=&orderBy=Date, to get the CSV). That CSV could be used as the basis of a Bot uploader. I don't know who could write one though. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:15, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- Nice find! That's a start. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 10:18, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
IA mirroring...[edit]
There was an unofficial effort to mirror certain IA collections on Commons.
Do you know of any specfic ones that should? (Other than the collections already uploaded.)
Mirroring the Catalog of Copyright volumes was because being able to check those had a direct impact on being able to confirm if certain works were compatible with Commons licensing (due to the absence of renewals) or to obtain limited metadata for older works.
See User_talk:Fæ/CCE_volumes#Suggestions_for_Collection_Mirrors to make suggestions.
ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:17, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: Thanks. The why makes sense to me--I was mostly asking about the how and the page you linked explains that, thank you. Fae is uploading thousands of documents and evidently not using a bot account. Is there some straightfoward way to mass import from Internet Archive? (Similarly, tho off topic, is there a way to import directly from YouTube like there is from Flickr?) I don't immediately know of Internet Archive collections that should be uploaded here and I'm honestly confused why someone would use those lower resolution sources with their weird WikiLeaks vanity pages instead of just getting them from congress.gov like I did. That seems odd to me but there may be a reason that I just don't understand. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 08:07, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:St. Louis Blues.webm. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Tea party Indianapolis flyer 2007.jpg[edit]
This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Tea party Indianapolis flyer 2007.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

- @Koavf: I believe passing Flickr review only means the image has been confirmed to be posted on Flicker with an appropriate license and does not preclude the file from having any other copyright issues (e.g. FOP). For this image, I believe you would not only require permission from the photographer but also the owner/creator of the car decor. Thanks, --17jiangz1 (talk) 20:13, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

File tagging File:Pluto TV 2020 logo.svg[edit]
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Pluto TV 2020 logo.svg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Pluto TV 2020 logo.svg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Which Aberdeen is it in?[edit]
File:Welcome to Aberdeen, Come As You Are.jpg is currently categorized under plain Category:Aberdeen, which is in Scotland. Link — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iketsi (talk • contribs)

- @Iketsi: How was my revert "inaccurate"? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 16:10, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
- It has been a while, but I think what I meant is that by reverting my addition of Category:Welcome signs in Scotland (which I based on the incorrect assumption that the file had been correctly categorized under Category:Aberdeen (Scotland)), you reverted it back to an inaccurate state, since the file was initially in the wrong Aberdeen category in the first place, as you pointed out. You subsequently fixed it by recategorizing the file under Category:Aberdeen, Washington, but since you immediately edited your revert, I deemed it to be an "inaccurate revert," because I believe that a revert carries an implication that the previous version was good. I fail to see the rationale behind reverting a change that you knew you needed to edit immediately, unless it was to rack up edits or perhaps as a quick way to make sure I get pinged about the change. Thanks again for your innumerable contributions. —Iketsi (talk) 17:28, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

The New Yorker[edit]
I strongly disagree with your renaming of The New Yorker's category. "The New Yorker, 1925" is consistent with other magazine years listed on Commons: Category:Life (magazine), Category:Judge (magazine), Category:The Saturday Evening Post (magazine), etc. Additionally, because 100+ images come from the first issue, "Volume 001" confusingly implies that the category only applies to the first issue despite the presence of the magazine covers for all other issues from the same year in the category. I think it would be much, much better to create a separate subcategory for the first 21 Feb 1925 issue while keeping "The New Yorker, 1925" as the main category. PDMagazineCoverUploading (talk) 18:05, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- @PDMagazineCoverUploading: Sounds good: thanks for educating me about the other categories and I think your suggestion about per-issue categories is sound as well. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 18:31, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- No problem. I appreciate all of the uploads from the first issue BTW, I just want to make sure the categories are correct. PDMagazineCoverUploading (talk) 19:09, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:The Inauguration of the 46th President of the United States.ogv.
(See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Don't waste your time[edit]
Hi. Given their personal attack, I am now convinced that they are a block evading sock of Taha Khattabi (see SPI), so just ignore them. I have also reverted their change here to a map that was targetted before by Hpyounes (a sock of Khattabi). The map in question cannot be changed seeing as it has been stable since 2016 and is used on many projects (please add it to your watch list). Regards. M.Bitton (talk) 04:31, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
- M.Bitton, even if that map is a 100 years old, its no longer relevant because the source (CIA World Factbook) no longer supports it. Go see for yourself. And talk about a map that has been "stable since 2016", when you're here trying to revert the Portugal Morocco Locator, which has been stable since 2012. And for the record, I certainly did not personally attack Koavf, I simply stated what their stance is because the information was available on Wikipedia (a public site). Best. Thanks for uploading File:Matt groening, kelsey grammer, james l brooks - 3511471167 (cropped).jpg.
We need your feedback![edit]
Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!
I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.
We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.
Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.
Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.
Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

I would like to explain it here, to avoid overflowing the thread at COM:AN I do not agree with your comment in Special:Diff/592478177. User:Sarang knows Template-editing better than anyone else I know. So he would not remove it if there is an additional equal-sign.
I'm not shure if you fully read Template:Internationalization_template_doc#Parameter_#1.
I know that adding an equal-sign would lead to problems, see User_talk:Sarang#Erklärung_der_Meinungen, however as I said earlier some text
works but
not, therefore adding 1=
is also problematic, and it is also unusual.
I wrote templates (e.g. FakeSVG) and help-pages (e.g. Help:SVG_guidelines), that does not mean there is a consents on that (it is just defined by someone). Actually Sarang did many edits on Template:Internationalization_template_doc, so he is well aware of this definition. Just because someone did define something. Maybe you should read the right lower corner of User_talk:Davey2010, and if you don't understand it please follow the link.
Please do not repeat old posts in Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#User_is_making_thousands_of_errors_with_an_automated_script,_refuses_to_discuss.

- @JoKalliauer: "So he would not remove it if there is an additional equal-sign." Anyone could add one at any time. There is zero reason to remove
1=
. Why is removing it somehow better? Please see Template:En, where it explicitly says that1=
is required. I don't care to comment on how otherwise competent any editor is at anything else or whether or not you think that I should post multiple threads when the same problem continues to occur. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:07, 20 September 2021 (UTC)- Danke. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 13:34, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- @JoKalliauer: Once more I try to explain he facts, because he shows difficulties to understand the simplest template documentation.
- When a parameter is required, this is in all template documentations expressed with a line in the table, which left column shows the
parameter name
, then a textual description for theparameter value
, and right (in this case) the code "required".- A named parameter needs to be specified by
name=
, which may as well be an alias, - a positional parameter is specified either by its position or by the positional number (e.g. 1=, 2=, 3=...). With other words: the parameter value is required, the parameter name (= the number) is optional and not even suggested; it is not required but it becomes necessary (another thing than the un/requiredness in the sense of template documentation!) when (and only when) the parameter value string contains a "free equal sign" {an equal sign outside of another template). The positional number is also necessary when positional parameters are specified outside of their positional order.
- A named parameter needs to be specified by
- Your interpretion that the template description "explicitly says that 1= is required" is definitely wrong, it is erroneous and results from your unability to read correctly the template documentation and to understand what it says.
- Where you have a continuing problem, Wikipedia hasn't; you should not bore others with it. -- sarang♥사랑 06:45, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi Koavf,
I've just noticed that you created and populated the category:Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language animations. Not all SVG animations use SMIL, though, such as File:Penang_Island_textured_model_CSS3_animation.svg and File:Rolling_circle_optical_illusion.svg which instead use CSS3 animation. As far as I can remember, I've labelled my animations with SMIL with SMIL in the filename.
Cheers,

- It's up to you if you want to. Category:Animated_SVG already has SVG with animations in general. I'll move your category into it and see if anyone wants to audit the files. I'll remove mine which I know don't use SMIL. Thanks for your work regardless, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 13:57, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi there,
I've reverted your crop of the above image. This might make sense if it was truly a background-less image (i.e. 100% white or transparent), but it's not; the background is still obviously there, and it needs some surrounding space to avoid looking unnaturally cramped.
You added the "opaque" tag suggesting that "a PNG or SVG version" without a background be uploaded from a "non-JPEG source". But... well, it *is* a photo from a JPEG source(!) and- at the risk of stating the obvious- that doesn't come with a PNG version that has the background automatically removed.
If you're willing to do the hard work of Photoshopping it to (convincingly) remove the background yourself, and upload that version as a borderless PNG version under a different filename, please feel free to do so.
Maybe I could have spent more time setting this up and editing it myself, but that's not something I have the time- or inclination- to do for everything I upload.
All the best,
Multicherry (talk) 23:01, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Multicherry: Thanks. I have no strong feelings on the crop looking weird, but I think there's value in an image that doesn't have this background. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 23:06, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

File tagging File:ARRI Rental ALEXA 65.jpg[edit]
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:ARRI Rental ALEXA 65.jpg.
Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:ARRI Rental ALEXA 65.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Image version warring[edit]
It looks like you're edit warring on multiple files to force a preferred version (e.g. File:Raspberry-Pi-2-Bare-Bottom.jpg). If you really want a version without whitespace, upload it with a different filename. — Rhododendrites talk | 00:49, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- So you think that we need two images where one of them has 3% less whitespace on the vertical axis? See Commons:Overwriting_existing_files#Substantial_crop_or_un-crop. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 05:53, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- No, but if you feel so passionately about trimming a little whitespace against the wishes of the image creator that you're willing to edit war, that's a way you can do so. There's another part to the policy you just cited: If another editor thinks that a change is not an improvement (even if the editor making the change thinks it's minor), the change can be reverted. Once a change has been reverted, the new image should be uploaded under a new filename (unless the reverting editor explicitly or implicitly agrees to the contested change). — Rhododendrites talk | 14:05, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
File:Cypher of Charles III.webp has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Category:The_American_Monthly_Review_of_Reviews,_1890 has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Licensing[edit]
Please point me to where that file is freely licensed. Thanks Herby talk thyme 12:05, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- I already did and quoted it so you can use Ctrl+F to find it. I don't know what else you want me to do here. Did you even check yourself before you tagged the file? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 12:07, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- Yes I did and the bottom of that web page has a copyright statement. Sadly there is no way to link to the actual free licensing part. Herby talk thyme 12:16, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- The PDF itself and the web page explicitly say that it's CC BY 4.0 licensed. I don't know how you're not seeing it. On the PDF, it's on the first page and on the website, it's at the bottom under "Rights and Permissions". Again, search for "This article is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License". —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 17:32, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

Regarding your diff about those socks, they weren’t locked. These are all my socks. Please request they be locked at Meta:Steward requests/Global. I’m trying to get my socks locked globally before I leave. I also advice that you can do it in this format: and all u have to do is copy and paste it. You can use MultiLock to do so. —STestAccount1 (int:Talkpagelinktext) 17:50, 6 October 2022 (UTC)
