Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:53, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

File I uploaded was deleted[edit]
(Copy from my talk page - FYI) -- Jtneill - Talk 23:51, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged {{OTRS pending}} for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have not sent the permission, please send it to "permissions-commonswikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. If you have, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard, quoting the file name, so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Please note that this message is being left by an automated bot, whose operator is not an OTRS volunteer, therefore please do not send this information to me, as it will not save your images from deletion. Thanks for your time! Please help translate this message! HersfoldOTRSBot(talk/opt out) 04:58, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

File tagging File:Jean Pain.jpg[edit]
This media was probably deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:Jean Pain.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Jean Pain.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

File:Cogdog-1635297552.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:Leighblackall-2193595519.jpg. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk.
The file you added has been deleted. If you believe that this file was not a derivative work of a non-free work, you may request undeletion.

- This was wrong Funfood, and especially wrong of the deleting admin INeverCry - a person can upload a file to Commons as CC-BY and upload the same file to flickr as (c) All rights reserved. Its their file; what else they do with the file is their own business. Please be more careful in future, and talk to the uploader before deleting their files. So rude. John Vandenberg (chat) 06:06, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- No, this was not wrong. For example have look at File:Leighblackall-2191549033.jpg. This is COM:DW from [1] and this image is "all rights reserved" from the photographer on the flickr-source. If the original photographer has this image also somewhere else with a free license, this one should be given as source, not the copyrighted one. I haven't looked through all the tagged files by now, but the ones I took a look at, are not free yet at the named flickr-source. Greetings --Funfood ␌ 06:41, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

- Hi Leighblackall, I saw you are adding the sources from flickr, but please check if they are suitable for Commons. For example File:Leighblackall-2193749918.jpg, the flickr source doesn't allow commercial use, so it is not allowed on commons! Greetings --Funfood ␌ 08:26, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hello Funfood, please refer to that resource's discussion page for notes on my efforts to verify the original license at the time I made and published the derivative. Please be assured that I know what copyrights are permitted on Commons, but that I have fallen victim to the Flickr platform allowing author's to change licenses, delete files, or delete accounts. When I make slides like these, I ONLY search the CC By database. I'm certain that the licenses are being changed by the Flickr users. Is there any way to check the history of a Flickr file's data? leighblackall (talk) 08:32, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- BTW, at the time I loaded these to Commons, I admit that I didn't have a handle on properly using the templates. Even now, I find communicating around all these templates being added to my talk page, quite difficult. leighblackall (talk) 08:32, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- I can't believe you would go ahead and delete the file without at least checking for a response, or looking at the discussion page! What's going on your side FunFood? leighblackall (talk) 08:35, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, apologies FunFood, I assumed it was you who deleted it, but it turns out it was Turelio. I just read through a tragic exchange between Turelio and someone trying to get involved with the big wikis. From the perspective I read these things, I reckon more help could of been offered. I think it will be easier in my case, to simply go to the Wikiversity and Wikibooks pages where these images are being used, and delete them. While I am resolving the source information for some, for others the license information on Flickr has changed, or the file or user account has been deleted. Nothing I can do about that. leighblackall (talk) 09:23, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- So just a hint from me for the future: when you are uploading images derived from flickr-images, it would be best to upload the source images from flickr too to Commons, so it can be verfied that they are freely licensed. If the flickr uploader changes the license there later, it would not affect the free license on Commons and the image can be used! --Funfood ␌ 09:38, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- Similar advise from me at File talk:Leighblackall-2193749918.jpg. --Túrelio (talk) 10:04, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- How does that assure us though? If the original author on Flickr changes their license, then I would be defending two images on Commons. The orignal and the derivative. Is there some technical thing I'm not aware of, that somehow saves the license mark on the Flickr page, at the time it was loaded to Commons? leighblackall (talk) 05:02, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
- Apologies Turelio, I see you had already answered my question on the talk page linked above. Thanks. Lucky we have that program running now. Not so fortunate for me though. leighblackall (talk) 05:10, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

File:Ask ninja.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
