Where published please?[edit]
With regard to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Trinidad School in 1913.jpeg, please identify the publication in which this was published prior to 1926? I don't see a publication but you referenced it in your close. Thanks! Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:11, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Ellin Beltz: for US law, Publication has a technical meaning in copyright law. According to the statute, “Publication is the distribution of copies or phonorecords of a work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending. The offering to distribute copies or phonorecords to a group of persons for purposes of further distribution, public performance, or public display constitutes publication. A public performance or display of a work does not of itself constitute publication.” Generally, publication occurs on the date on which copies of the work are first made available to the public. For further information see Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section “Publication.”
- the photo was a group photo for the school in that year.
- the only possibility for the photo to be "not published" is if the photo studio never gave the photo to anyone. since it was a group photo for a school, this would be highly unlikely. i think we can assume with confidence the photo must have been offered to the school or anyone in that photo. that distribution was publication.--RZuo (talk) 21:08, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- I find your interpretation interesting as so very many other situations have gone the other way. So you are saying that the day a photo is published in Facebook, or the day someone hands out a copy of an image starts the copyright clock? That's an interesting position, but one which rarely settles like that in Deletion Nominations. Could you provide some links to former situations where this has been applied? Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:04, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Ellin Beltz: here's a 2012 discussion: Commons:Village_pump/Copyright/Archive/2012/07#Definition_of_Publication.
- this kind of group photo was most probably a photo for the group to keep, and it was quite possibly a sale, unlike other kinds of studio portrait/artistic photographs of single persons which could just be for the photographers' personal enjoyment.--RZuo (talk) 22:06, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
- FYI that photographers heirs just closed his studio due to Covid. I would be super careful on this one, but it was your close. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 20:47, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Filemover![edit]
Hi RZuo, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Excuse me, may I ask some help? recently on the DR page, the nominator complained about the notability of the source YouTube channel of the videos, but AFAIK, there is no "notability" requirement of the source of files on Commons imposed by many of the Wikipedia sites (see the differences between Wikipedia policies and Commons' ones ), and the use of files on Commons on other Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia articles ("If an article on the subject of the video exists, ..." the nominator said) is not necessarily demanded to offer educational value because files on Commons can also be used outside of Wikimedia projects(that's why files on Commons are freely licensed). For example there is no "All of these videos must be used in Wikipedia articles" restriction imposed such as these videos (Category:Videos_about_COVID-19) Also, the license info of the videos has been archived ("source" section of each description page of the videos) and CC license is irrevocable, and some of the videos has successfully been reviewed already, this is an example. Hi, I am answering there because at the category discussion started kind of edit war with the taylor. I do not like to delete the work of others - but for many uploads it would be the best solution! Instead of requesting deletion I collected poor & unused raster images in that category, with the main intention that not a user finds such an image and uses it. Better than to keep such crap would be to make good SVG files when needed. Unfortunately my categorizing was fighted by others, so I stopped my efforts; it is not so essential to me, I just had been trying to get a better ordering system. When you think of requesting deletion, it has my blessing -- sarang♥사랑 10:26, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

Edit of category[edit]
Hi RZuo,
I think this picture (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Sun_(195390785).jpeg&curid=71469905&diff=721876681&oldid=721875724) fits better in the previous category. We don't know where that picture was shoot. It was imported with other pictures and every single one has the same coordinates, which are clearly wrong, see for example this picture of Senglea in Malta: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sun_(195390773).jpeg that has coordinates that point to Alba County as well. Ivanbranco (talk) 17:36, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Ivanbranco: thx for telling me the coords are wrong! sorry i had no idea. but i just used google lens to find out that it's a fort in italy.
- i removed your cat because panorama refers to a "wide-angle view" like File:Puesta de sol, desierto de Namib, Namibia, 2018-08-05, DD 84-90 PAN.jpg, so here on commons we only categorise such images as panoramas.
- how did you know that's "Senglea in Malta"? how come you dont change its cats?--RZuo (talk) 18:21, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
- if i didnt discover it's forte rivoli, i would put it in Category:Unidentified mountains. RZuo (talk) 18:34, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

Panoramas by country[edit]
Thanks for lending a hand on a couple of these. One note, I see you went from Panoramics in Australia to Panoramas of Australia. I have likewise been changing "panoramics" to "panoramas" but I have been leaving the "in" alone. I actually prefer "of" but that hadn't been discussed as far as I am aware. We should definitely clear up which participle to use for these before we go too much further with the renaming. Josh (talk) 06:23, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Joshbaumgartner: i had considered the problem. because the analogous cat trees Category:Photographs by country Category:Views by country "photographs" "views" all use "of", and https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/panorama_1 panorama is "a view of a wide area of land", i chose "of".
- people may argue that, a panoramic picture of a city is not a "panorama of the country", and it's impossible to take a panoramic picture of the entire country, but likewise, a photograph of anything in the country is not a photograph of the entire country, yet the cat tree being "photographs of france" serves its purpose well. i think it's ok to adopt "panoramas of .." for all levels of the cat tree. RZuo (talk) 11:08, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
- As said, I agree with "of". Note that "of" has evolved in our ontology and has a very broad scope. Basically, in any "primary topic of defining topic" category encompasses all instances of the primary topic that have a relation with the defining topic (see Of (relation) vs. In (relation)). Thus any panorama which has a relation to Australia can exist under Panoramas of Australia. Panoramas in Australia is potentially more limiting as the panoramas must be located within Australia and this could have some strange effects if taken seriously (for example if a panorama of Australia is on display in New York, is it a panorama in the United States at that point?). I would not worry much about whether the entirety of a location is captured by the panorama--a panorama depicting a part of Australia, is still a panorama of Australia. I suggest we go ahead and be bold and use 'of'. If someone sees a particular need to specify "in" later, that can be made as a sub-category of the "of" categories. Josh (talk) 13:27, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Joshbaumgartner i added notes about prepositions to Commons:Categories for discussion/2018/02/Category:Panoramics, and suggested Commons:Categories for discussion/2023/02/Category:Panoramics of cities. RZuo (talk) 11:00, 10 February 2023 (UTC)
