File:Mercy Adisafe.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Uploads YouTube[edit]
Dear Victuallers, I only upload stills from videos from YouTube with a Creative Commons license. Licenses at YouTube videos are frequently changed though. The link to the archived video at archive.org is also given, with the correct CC license still visible. Vysotsky (talk) 23:21, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:2019 Nari Shakti Puraskar award from the President of India in Delhi.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. Mairi Hedderwick pics[edit]
Much as I like the new Mairi Hedderwick pics you have uploaded, I am not sure whether they can be used here.
Although they are on Flickr as CC-BY, they also carry the wording "No sales or syndication", which is a narrower condition than CC-BY, and I am not sure we can host it here. (It's getting close to CC-BY-NC, which we definitely can't host here). "No sales" is a clear restriction on some commercial forms of re-use, and "no syndication" looks like no re-licensing. Jheald (talk) 17:56, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Jheald: I'm aware of that but I think you will find that the publisher in this case the Scottish government has decided that it is OK. That's OK for me but I know that some times the consensus is that despite it being overseen by a large responsible body that we know more and we can see what was intended despite the contradiction. I would say trust the last decision made by the Scots gov, but its the decision of the consensus I guess. Victuallers (talk) 20:11, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- I thought about this overnight and on second thoughts lets delete these images. The point above is important but the stake is not large enough to debate. Cheers Victuallers (talk) 08:10, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks. No hard feelings, I hope. It would be great if you could be in touch with the Scottish Government and get to the bottom of this, because they would be lovely images to be able to have. Jheald (talk) 08:35, 17 March 2021 (UTC) I have done. Victuallers (talk) 10:46, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hey folks, I was in touch with the ScotGov folk about their Flickr account a month or so ago (with my user:Sara Thomas (WMUK) hat on) - they kindly moved almost everything (with a few exceptions) to CC-BY-SA, but there were a few that they had to exclude, these ones were some of them. I'm uploading the rest (filtered somewhat to only take over what's relevant and suitable for commons to c:Category:Images from the Scottish Government Flickr account. More info here. Lirazelf (talk) 12:33, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Lirazelf: It is brilliant work, I have been bigging it up with Ewan, Karen and Melissa. It has already spawned an article from me and I have labelled&catted several of the images. Hopefully the other big Scots institutions will follow the lead. The Royal Society said they would and Ed University makes good moves in that direction. In the case though of the images here then it appears that the change licensing mistakenly moved these images into commons. We are going to delete them as we wanted to show ppl like Scotgov that they can be generous and wiki will revert if they make a mistake.

Ethel Grimwood portrait[edit]
Hi Victuallers, I think the anonymous portrait of Ethel Grimwood (1892) which you uploaded may be by the English portrait artist John Hanson Walker (1844-1933). An article in the 'The Times'(London) of May 21, 1892, p.6, reviewing that year's exhibition at the Royal Academy notes: "Lastly, Mr. Hanson Walker is to be congratulated on his good fortune in securing Mrs. Frank Grimwood as a sitter (976); he has repaid the debt by painting a much better portrait than he has ever painted before..." RLamb (talk) 15:04, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
- @RLamb: Nice spot. I should add that to the description. I see that her biog has another portrait on the cover and presumable Ms Morse can tell us which is which. Luckily it will still be out of copyright whatever the outcome. Victuallers (talk) 16:48, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
- No, I was wrong. I got hold of the biography of John Hanson Walker, brought out in 1987 by the same Belinda Morse who also did the book on Mrs Grimwood. (It turns out Belinda Morse is Walker's great-granddaughter.) Her biography has an illustration of the portrait he exhibited in the R.A. in 1892 and it's not this one. Walker's R.A. painting shows Mrs Grimwood head and shoulders only, turning three quarter left, in a black dress with a square neckline and with the Royal Red Cross award she was given for bravery pinned over her heart. Apparently it's still in the US in private hands. The portrait in the Wikipedia article is essentially the same as the one appearing on the front of the Illustrated London News of 27 June 1891 (https://collections.nlm.nih.gov/catalog/nlm:nlmuid-101460235-img). But either way, as you say, it seems to be in the public domain so no worries:) RLamb —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 79.69.196.100 (talk) 15:29, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
{{Check categories}} of Dießen, Haltepunkt St Alban v SO, 1 – any clues?[edit]
Good time of the day, you marked my image Dießen, Haltepunkt St Alban v SO, 1 as {{Check categories}}. The image has four categories, and I don't see which one(s) might be problematic. Or do you mean that an important category is missing? Any hints would be appreciated. (Edit: your comment was Requesting category check.) -- ~~
- My error I suppose or new app tool error. Your pic looks fine. Sorry Victuallers (talk) 16:01, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
- No problem. Thanks for the clarification. -- Renardo la vulpo (talk) 21:20, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
Proper indication of derivative works in your Woman of the Day-pictures[edit]
Hi Victuallers, as you may have noticed, I flaged several of your pictures because the source of derivative work is not properly indicated. Your pictures show other images, and you need to indicate where they are coming from. The easiest way to do so is by simply linking to the original image on Wikimedia Commons. In this way, it is possible to verify their licences. Furthermore, you need to comply with the conditions of the image's licence, e.g. if a picture is licenced under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike, you need to attribute the author of the included picture. The same is true for the text, which is licenced under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. In this case, the easiest way to attribute the many authors of an article would be by simply linking to the history page of the respective article. Thank you and cheers, --Andel (talk) 06:54, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

Flickr2Commons[edit]
I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first").--A1Cafel (talk) 14:28, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- @A1Cafel: I think you will find that I nearly always do or the tool at "upload file". I only download them where there is a (mistaken) license issue which the automatic tools refuse to override. Victuallers (talk)

Thanks for uploading File:Olga Rudenko 10 Risking it all for the Truth Journalists and Media in Crises.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. On the 27th of May you deleted this image because it wasn't listed on Flickr.com under the same license. I undeleted it because I think you missed the context under which this file was uploaded: its author has removed the free license from a great many images on Flickr. I had previously intended to upload the images from this account from before I started following it, but didn't have the technical skills 7 years ago. It's a big hastle to upload them now that the author has changed the licenses, but as you know a CC license isn't something you're supposed to be able to remove from work. The 8 images in Category:Koninginnedag 2012 in Dordrecht are all of this author. Three of these had their Flickr page archived by the Internet Archive, where you can check that what I'm saying it true: Image 1, Image 2, Image 3. I hope you agree that this is enough proof to validate that all 8 of these images used to have the CC-BY license. Vera (talk) 21:22, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

Images for Wiki loves monuments[edit]
Hi Victuallers, thanks for adding images for Wiki loves monuments. Unfortunately you images don't end up int eh proper cateogries. Please don't use add Category:Wiki loves monuments, but daa template {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2022|gb-sct}}. I corrected a few, like this one. Please correct the recent uploads, which you can find in the mentioned category. Thanks HenkvD (talk) 13:59, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks @HenkvD: for your concern, I did look for the correct category which I could easily add with the tool I use, but I'm not likely to add a particular template as I would need to edit every image, I'd much rather add images to wikicommons, as I do every week. Would you prefer that I leave them as is? or use "Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Scotland"? or stop adding templates? I'm interested and supportive of the contest, but my motivation is adding new images to wikidata (over taking part in a photo contest). Please advise and I will add the category of your choice but I don't know how to add a template to all of my photos with one edit and I would not edit every image to several missing categories for WLM in the Scottish Borders & Scotland & UK etc. cheers and thank you for your work Victuallers (talk) 16:58, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Victuallers. if you are not particular interested in the WLM contest you could leave out all of the categories stating "Wiki Lives Monuments". If you choose you could add a category like "Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Scotland", but I can't guarantee they will be counted as entries for the WLM competition, as the images are missing the template. License review for Youtube Media[edit]
Could you please review these files? I was looking through some of the files I uploaded years ago and some of the creative licenses provided have been removed from the videos: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pooh_Shiesty_in_2021.png https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stunna_4_Vegas.png https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lil_Tecca_2019.png https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:50_Cent_in_2018.png Shoot for the Stars (talk) 22:17, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
Sascha Riether[edit]
Not everyone has to understand everything. But reverting and edit-waring is never a good idea. So I won't set you revert back again. But of course there could be a case made for a way better crop with much less "bad" background, so that the picture much better fit's the need's at wikidata ... which this template is made for. --Mirer ([[User talk:|talk]]) 16:27, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Mirer: I disagree. The template is designed so that one person can be picked out of a group or a much larger photo. If you use the template on a picture that is already of the person and ask for it to be cropped then you are assuming the editor reading the template has psychic powers to work out what you had in mind. I'm going around doing the crops that are requested. If I find one where it looks as if the crop has already been done then I flag it as "done". I lack the insight to work out if a further crop is thought to be a good idea. Victuallers (talk) 16:52, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
- I sometimes delete them too. But here (to me) it is clear that on the left and upper side of the picture is to much background, that makes the head a) bad positioned and not so good to be recognised. Therefore the IP who set the template, just wants a better crop for wikidata. The one provided is just not good. --Mirer (talk) 17:44, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
- You might see that but I m looking at a cropped image which (says it) needs cropping to show "the man" when it clearly shows "the man". If its not clear then I'm not sure how I am expected to know that "left and upper side of the picture has too much background" when the guidance for cropping does not contain anywhere near that subtley. We have thousands and thousands of images that need some real cropping. Wikidata is missing so many images and its tricky to make much progress when they are surrounded by images where the crop is IMO OK or (in someones opinion sub-optimal) and the instruction is "crop to show man". - when all I can see is "a man". Victuallers (talk) 19:06, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
- That's right. These instructions are to often not used or not used in a helpful manner. We have at least two guys working as IP-users who do a good job at digging pictures that are missing on wikidata, but who don't often use a lot of time watching at the pictures they tag. Sometimes there should be a hint which person is the right one, sometimes there is no face to be seen etc. So we have to work with what is left/done in a helpful way. --19:22, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]
Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on 1 May 2023, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Thanks for uploading File:Louisa Thomson Price postcard re anti-suffrage.webp.
Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
